Fantastic location, gorgeous rooms and character of the property, lovely staff (especially Vincenzo and the breakfast room staff). One of the highlights was to have breakfast with live musicians - very talented harpists and pianists! The thermae pools are a real treat. Really lovely hotel - highly recommend!

The entire stay was a great experience, the hotel is exceptional and very unique. Really different experience - in a very good sense - from a "regular" hotel. Location great, many fine restaurants and bars within walking distance, relative easy walk to several great vies points in Matera. Breakfast was very good, not only the food but the atmosphere - piano playing in the backgraund.

This hotel is fabulous. The location is prefect right in the old town. The room was in a cave, atmospheric but modern, high taste level, clean, quiet. The service facilities are great …to the pizza restaurant, the breakfast (brilliant & generous), two concierge desks, the hotel areas are lovely. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Feels like a bit of luxury but still great value for money. Would stay again in a heart beat!

Location of the hotel was ideal for a walk up to the old town of Civita and also Sasso Caveoso; Sasso Barisano where the hotel is based has lots of restaurants to choose from and is lovely to wander around. Not too busy even though the hotel fronts onto the main street. The suite was enormous with a great choice of food offered for breakfast - I had to turn food away so it did not go to waste! The suite had a private entrance and air conditioning to die for! The staff were very friendly and took time away to show me around; they were happy to spend time talking to you. Cannot recommend it more highly.

I cannot recommend Matera more highly. You will not want to walk around all day every day due to the layout of the City - wherever you go, you have to walk up and down staircases on old cobblestones or uphill and down again. It's hard on the legs unless you are very fit. There are sight-seeing buses and buggies for hire, but I didn't try any of these as you don't get to see the 'proper' Matera, which is all of the back streets.
I went in early June and it was still early 30's and very hot at night.
There is a lot of choice for restaurants - most you can walk into in the evening and not have to worry about booking.
You must try to see Matera at night-time/sunset/sunrise - it's a treat. It is so picturesque, you will be glued to your camera/ phone.

Always depends on your expectations, but our feeling was Matera was definitively worth 1 full day or 2, especially if you hike to the point of view on the other side of the little canyon, and/or visit a few historic monuments. We could not visit the famous trogloditic crypts of the original sin since the touristic site to make the compulsory reservations (1 day in advance) is such an absurd mess.

The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia. The ancient city is exceptional and definitely worth staying over the night . You easily get lost when walking around (GPS is not very helpful) but it is part of the adventure;) . Be prepared to climb many steps and take your time to enjoy the unique climate of the place.

Matera is a beautiful place with stunning views of the sassi and cave dwellings. There are also some interesting attractions that you can visit to gain a better understanding of how people used to live and what Matera went through before becoming a UNESCO site and the amazing place it is today.
One such attraction is Casa Noha, which is a multimedia demonstration inside a historic stone house. It provides a helpful insight into the history of Matera and the struggles of cave-dwelling life.
Another interesting place to visit is Casa Grotta nei Sassi di Matera, which is not just a cave-dwelling but also a living museum. You can experience what it was like to live in a cave with a straw bed, tiny kitchen, and livestock all within the confines of the cave.
Chiesa Rupestre della Madonna della Croce is a church located on the other side of the Sassi. It offers great views and is definitely worth the drive from Matera.
We were excited to stay in a cave/hotel during our trip to Matera and l'Hotel di Pietra did not disappoint! We had a beautiful, large room with jacuzzi and sauna that was breathtaking. The staff was very helpful and the communal breakfast area in the main lobby area was very good as well! The hotel was a few minute walk from a main piazza and the center of town. From the entrance to the property we had a great view of the Duomo and the Sassi. Matera was magical and staying at Pietra complemented our Matera experience.
The staff at Sant’Angelo was truly amazing!!Everyone was so gracious, helpful and knowledgeable .Michele was fantastic. He went out of his way to make everything perfect for me and my family. This was the most amazing stay at this hotel. My grandparents are from Matera, so it was really special. The resort was like no other! The stunning views, the authenticity of the caves (with some added glam). The magical city views ! This is a must if you’re going to Matera. I can’t wait to go back.
I love this place! Matera is magical and Il Belvedere was just the icing on the cake for me. From
the warm and informative reception from Simone and the kindness from Davide, to the location and the aesthetic and the ample breakfast…I really could not have asked for a more delightful stay. The small single room fit perfectly with the Matera vibe, and the location was perfetto! I will absolutely be back, and I have already recommended the hotel to friends and family. Wonderful!
We stayed two nights in Matera at Fra I Sassi. It was a fantastic hotel in a perfect location in the Sassi. The view from our room’s own terrace was absolutely breathtaking. The room was in a restored cave but modern, beautiful and spotless. The property was peaceful and secure. All the staff were lovely, and breakfast was super. We used the parking and transport service offered by the hotel and it was worth the extra cost. Matera is magical and so is this hotel!
Wow. This place is a hidden gem. perfect location within the caves of Sassi with breathtaking views of Matera and the Duomo. The staff was so kind and friendly and helped us make reservations and gave us lots of advice. Also one of the best breakfast experiences we’ve had in Southern Italy! Very professional and personal service with top quality pastries, cheeses, breads, juice, and a big fantastic cappuccino! Highly recommended!
This is a true boutique hotel with outstanding service. All staff are very professional, attentive, eager to make guests happy. Rooms are very well decorated, good size, modern, comfortable. The gardens and free parking lot are beautiful. Excellent breakfast.
Staff were very helpful pointing the best places to visit in Matera, since the quaint town has so much to see and visit.
This is a really special place to stay. Yes it does not have all mod cons, but that is the point. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel service, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a great experience and night in one of the old Matera caves, look no further. Great location in fascinating Matera. Breakfast was a magnificent spread. Would heartily recommend this hotel.
The breakfast here was awesome! Everything in my room was pretty clean, and the balcony was a treat. Staff very friendly! About a 10 minute drive from a parking garage where you can park and then walk down into Matera and you can park for free on the hotel property. Definitely an ideal way to see Matera so you’re not driving down all the tiny narrow roads in the city.
A beautiful hotel located in the heart of Matera. Our view was incredible and our room was very comfortable. The receptionist was lovely, greeting us and giving us some restaurant and sight seeing recommendations. Breakfast was also fresh and delicious. I cannot fault this hotel at all and it is a highlight of our Italy trip.
This is a must stay hotel. everything was great. the breakfast, the staff, the location...all perfect. the spa is worth the extra fee. Matera really took out breath away. we will be back and will stay here. Cant recommend enough, If you have heavy luggage, call in advance and see if they can send a van for you.
It should be called a 5 star hotel, not a B&B! Everything - from the room to the breakfast - was perfect. Shower/bath is just superb - a real spa experience. The cave room - huge, modern and stylish. Breakfast - just excellend, both saulty abd sweet. Staff amazing.
Incredible experience!
Hotel owners & staff were very helpful - we arrived late due to flight cancellation and they helped us park the car and get us sorted. Nice breakfast. Great location. The cave room we had was very nice - good shower and lots of space. Bed was OK (for Italy !). Shared terrace outside.
Best breakfast in Italy ever ! Traditional products from Matera , all sorts . Sweets and pies as good as you could desire :)
Impressive Thermae-baths comprising long tunnels with blue/ green-lighted hot water.
Great view in the morning over Matera , you will leave in an ancient cave
The room was authentic fully escalated cave. Hotel is right next to the church and restaurant has a beautiful view of Matera. Breakfast was good, with good variety. Hotel offered a parking for $25 that included transfer to the hotel.
very awesome and design forward renovation. the juxtaposition of the ancient cave dwelling with modern amenities was super cool. it was our favorite hotel of the trip. immaculately clean. hosts were amazing. fantastic location.
We loved everything about the hotel and Matera! Bianca at the reception gave us great restaurant recommendation and booked us a table also. It was truly the best food we had in Italy!
Perfectly located; a modern cave hotel very tastefully designed. Breakfast was beyond expectations and the husband and wife team who are the hosts were extremely kind and helpful.
A fantastic genuine cave location right in the centre of Matera.
Well designed and looked after and clearly a family who care hugely about their hotel.
Excellent breakfast too
