Our three-night stay at Matraville Homestay was a very welcome change-of-pace after jungle treks and volcano hikes in Bukit Lawang and Berestagi. Our unit was VERY large (it would have easily suited a family of four) and well-appointed with a TV, fridge, sink and kettle for use. It was also spread over two levels, with the downstairs serving as the entrance/living room area/kitchenette, and the bedroom and bathroom/separate shower area upstairs. BONUS(ES): the unit entrance featured a little patio with a table and chair where you could have an early-morning coffee or tea while facing the sunrise; the upstairs level also provided a small balcony area to take in the morning sun or evening dusk. While the room we chose was across the street from the water (a 90-second walk at most, down a couple of shallow flights of steps, and therefore didn’t provide a direct waterfront view), there are two rooms available in another portion of the property that face the water and are just steps from it. Our excellent Host, Dimmer, picked us up from the Tuk Tuk ferry landing (and can also drop you off when you depart) and will provide you with everything you might need to make your stay comfortable, including tips on places to eat or have coffee nearby and suggestions for what to do/see on Samosir Island. He will also provide scooters for daily/multi-day use for very reasonable rates.

Toba Sunset í Tuk Tuk býður upp á gistirými, vatnaíþróttaaðstöðu, garð og fjallaútsýni. Gististaðurinn er með útsýni yfir vatnið og garðinn. Comfortable, clean and quiet; kind host; 15 minutes walking to centre; 40 minutes walking to Siallagan’s stone chairs; reasonable price. I do recommend this place.

Pondok Ganda is a recently renovated bed and breakfast in Ambarita, where guests can make the most of its garden and shared lounge. This property offers access to a terrace and free private parking. The location is fantastic, the host is fabulous! direct access to the lake for swimming. 2 bedrooms, atlhough in the description it looks that there is only one, but there are 2. Do not hesitate to book! The house is very clean also. We had a great time here!
