Port Moresby is not for the faint of heart. I liked it because it was part of the developing world I’d never seen. It’s an up and comer. The topography for this city is among the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. But they haven’t been able to capitalize on it. Not yet anyway. They will. Locally brewed SP beer is very good. Watch for it at a grocery store near you next year. Well, perhaps next decade. But watch! Haha. I never walked anywhere at night. Both because the layout of the city doesn’t lend itself to pedestrians. But also for safety issues. Every hotel and shopping mall is behind security gates. I never had any issues in my five days there. But I was also very careful. I’m told NGO workers are not allowed to walk outside their gated communities. In one instance, when I was about to walk to a nearby shopping mall, another expat offered to walk with. So neither of us was walking alone. We didn’t have any issues. But the fact that he made a point of finding a partner to walk to the mall with, was telling. I’m told the scuba diving is excellent. That’s part of the reason I came. But the weather was bad the day I went. So I couldn’t really tell for sure. But my hunch is it is pretty good. Port Moresby also has no tourist attractions. There’s no there there. The brochures handed out at the airport, instead of welcoming tourists, they welcomed mineral rights explorers. It was an adventurous place to be. I’m glad I went there once. But probably won’t be back.
The three or four things listed in travel reviews of this city can easily be done in one day and are nothing special. There are some other attractions outside the city and elsewhere in the country but are not easily accessible from this city due to poor infrastructure and not really being set up for tourism. Unless you have prebooked plans to fly out to some of the more interesting places elsewhere in the country I would not come to Port Moresby at all. It is not s destination in and of itself, as there is very little a western visitor would want to do there.
I was born and raised in Port Moresby but had for the past four years worked and lived outside of Port Moresby so returning on business trips is like I had to fork out from my savings to spend - it's quite expensive though the city that is.
Tropical weather, expats travel in hired vehicles or registered cab services, not advisable to travel in public transport. You will stand out. Goods and services are reasonable but some may find it expensive.
Fast growing city with many retail outlets made up of international and local budding designers. Restaurants and bars are in surplus so you will never go hungry or be a thirsty camel. With new motorways and freeways built, access to different suburbs takes less than 10mins and about 5mins into the CBD.
