Things to Do in Budapest asked travelers...

Describe your best tip for traveling cheap in Budapest.

Use the Budapest card, walk, use public transport and eat with the locals (I'd say it works almost everywhere anyway)
Hop-On-Hop-Off tours! its around 20 euro, and you get voucher worth a lot more (free: 2 soups, 2 beers, 1 shot, 2 cruises, 1 bike tour and soo much more) and works as a transport system as well as a tour guide, so you save tour, alkohol, bus money and you get sales on some museums and atractions as well! oohh and free walking/ bar hopping tours, these are tip based so you pay as much as you want!
there is a free walking tour that meets outside St Stephens basilica each day. It takes 3 hours but it gives you a short introduction and you can then re-visit the things that take your interest.
You pay a premium for river views so eating and drinking in riverside bars and restaurants (although still reasonable) are higher priced than establishments further in.
Avoid booking top advised restaurants- too pricey, too gourmet. Prefer street food! Buy opera tickets for a show in advance instead of paying for the tour.
Lots of little supermarkets are open late (until 10 PM) and are cheaper than the 24 hour stores you find here and there.
Food is cheap! You can hop in any cafe and enjoy their pastry and dessert. Transportation is cheap too.
Free walking tours, group ticket for all (metro, bus, tram).
Underground travelling is easy and very cheap. Very safe too
Use public transport for getting around
