Salvador has an amazing historic center with beautiful architecture, cathedrals and colorful shops and restaurants. There are beaches nearby and the weather is pleasantly warm all year. Prices are low for food and accommodation. Brazilians are very friendly and helpful. On the downside, like in most developing countries, there is a huge gap between the rich and poor, which is visible.
Salvador is a great city to explore if you like history, architecture or dining out. The neighborhood of Pelourinho is a good place to start your exploration. There is where the city of Salvador began. You can take a quick tour which lasts about 2 hours and see most of the main attractions, like the Cathedral & Basilica of Salvador (Catedral do Santissimo Salvador), and a block away you can visit the Baroque Church & Convent of Sao Francisco. The boutique Hotel Villa Bahia sits between the 2 churches and is a lovely hotel. Nearby, you can find some excellent restaurants, such as Chez Bernard, Amado, Soho and others. If you want to combine some culture with a trip to the beach, visit the Fort of Sao Antonio da Barra (it's also a lighthouse, and there is a small museum to explore), and then you can enjoy sunbathing on the beach right next to the fort (Praia da Barra). Other neighborhoods worth visiting include Rio Vermelho, Pituba and Itapuã (there is another lovely lighthouse here and Restaurante Mistura is not to be missed). There are tons of things to see and do in this city, and Salvador is less expensive than Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, so I recommend putting this on your “to do” list.
I went there with my partner end of August, and stayed at the Pelourinho. Unfortunately, this was very poor timing, as it's off season and therefore there are not many people on the streets - but there are a lot of homeless people in the area, which made us feel uncomfortable/unsafe. I love Salvador, but I'll never come back again during the off season period (only during high season!).
The city is beautiful even in the rainy season. I stayed for 8 days but I think 4-5 would have been enough. It poured on one day so I went to Shopping do Barra which is a mall. The best beaches are Flamengo and the one to the right of the Farol do Barra. Going to Pelourinho during the day is a must, and you can also go to the "sambas" in the evening to dance traditional Brazilian rhythms (make sure to go early between 6 to 7 pm, because they usually end between 10 pm and 12 am (depending on the day). There are not many clubs.
Salvador is a magical city, mixing beautiful beaches with historic culture and lots of music. It has the typical public safety problems in Brazil, but great support for tourists and a very hospitable population. It's really worth getting to know.
I love the churches, especially the ones around Sao Francisco square and the Pelourinho area. The little shops and restaurants around this area are interesting to visit and there is so much art work available to see and buy.
Barra, Salvador
Lobby/breakfast area was very attractive. Breakfast time was a nice experience with an array of things to try - certainly a highlight for this hotel. Wifi on both floors worked. Location is good I thought. Barra beach areas and rambla/walkway were very lively when I was there. A few restaurants and small supermarkets are nearby, as well as an outdoor exercise path next to the big shopping mall complex. You can use Uber to reach Centro for tourist stuff. Easy to use security gate front door and floors were clean. I would stay again.
Very well located, nice pool area, nice sitting area and garden, facing the sea - close to the airport by taxi or Uber. The staff was very friendly. There's a restaurant in the hotel, and a small and nice pizzeria, so there is no need to go out to eat. The caipirinha is awesome. Breakfast is very good. This is a very friendly and convenient hotel for us, as a stop point for a few days while traveling from one city to another through Salvador. Good value for money.
Fantastic hotel in Salvador Bahia, very clean and comfortable, grate breakfast, tasty food, excellent restaurant in the property, outdoor swimming pool and sunbath facilities, quiet place, huge park, fitness. Friendly and efficient staff! Beds are fantastic, you may choose from pillow menu. I have been in room 820 - great ocean view! Will visit again next year!
Location was ok, it is in a very nice and safe place (in Salvador, it counts) and the view can be great if you are at the right side of the hotel (Unfortunately, I wasn´t...). The area for breakfast is really charming, with a nice view of the bay, and there were lots of marmosets! (I know, they can be a nuisance, but I love them).
The location was perfect to visit the old town of Salvador. Breakfast was very good, staff very helpful and friendly. We liked the style/decoration of the hotel. It is a charming, easy going place which is nicely decorated, especially for its category.
Barra, Salvador
Petunia and her family showed us what Brazilian hospitality is at its very best with grace, kindness and incredible generosity. The breakfast is exceptional and is a Brazilian culinary tour on its own! Can't wait to get back!
