Located in Trogen, 6.2 mi from St. Gallen, B&B Bühlerstrasse features a garden and free WiFi. All units come with a balcony, a kitchen with a dishwasher and a microwave, and a shared bathroom. The comfort of the bed and spaciousness of the room, the easy feel of the place, the mind-blowingly good breakfast, the good value - but all of this secondary to the open friendliness, care and attentiveness of the proprietor, Cornelia, who met me at the train from St Gallen.
Located in Trogen, 5.6 mi from Sankt Gallen and 2789 feet from the local ski elevator, Zimmervermietung Trogen offers renovated rooms with free WiFi and a shared kitchen for self-catering. The room and bathroom are basic but clean. The communal kitchen is clean and have all the facilities. Outside however everything is neglected and the staircase is in derelict condition.
Hotel Appenzellerhof is located about 4.3 mi above St.Gallen in the village of Speicher and is easily reachable by car or public transport. It offers free parking, free Wi-Fi and healthy food. The owners run the hotel and they go way beyond the norm of great hospitality. I travel a lot so it was fabulous to stay in a place where you really feel people are in the trade because they actually like, and are interested in people - rather than polished hospitality! It was raining the day I left....so they ran me to the train station in St Gallen! So grateful for that! Bedroom was spacious, lots of light, excellent desk in front of large windows with a view towards the mountains. Bed comfy. Slept well. Sauna was good. Walking, hiking it’s all there.
Set in a historic building that was completely renovated in 2015, Gasthaus Krone Speicher Boutique-Hotel is a 4-star hotel in the center of Speicher in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. St. Big and comfortable rooms, kind staff, really clean. Fantastic breakfast and restaurant.
The Bach Foundation concert in the Trogen church (F Jan 17, 2020) was extraordinarily good; after years of having deeply appreciated their performances on bachipedia.com, I finally got to attend a real concert in their "home" venue in Trogen. I couldn't believe I was there, seeing and hearing in person performers I have only seen and heard on video. This was one of the great musical experiences of my life, as an audience member. The next day I visited the "open house" at the Welz carpentry/design firm in Trogen, which was also hugely impressive - a true blend of tradition and modernity, which seems so deeply Swiss!
It all depends on what the traveller requires. Trogen is a small village . It's ideal if you want to walk or use it as a stopping off place. Now a days, Pestalozzi Village helps young adults from all different countries to communicate and make life better for everyone when they return after the course. It is beautiful there and the staff are very kind and helpful. They really need help with costs etc. to make life better for these children and their home countries.
