Gutape is cool, not polluted and so safe that people leave doors open. I wasn't given a pavilion key and the door could easily be opened if the nearby window was open. There are two main towns, El Penol and Guatape. El Penol is larger and more everyday paced; Guatape has restaurants by the dozens to cater to the tourists from Medellin, Colombia, and, increasingly, from another continent. The altitude is such that it is between 62 and 78 F. year round; however, global warming seems to have raised the maximal temperature to 80F. or a bit more. The "lake" is beautiful, steep promontories along a winding "coastline", dotted with secondary homes of wealthy Colombians for the most part. Last notice is that the place is above 1800 meters and I had altitude sickness, which would have dissipated over a few days. The only tourist landmark is a giant black rock that Colombians seem to find attractive and they can climb to the top. I found it a dark, mass that ruined the overall scenery. To each his own.
Busy but charming town. Lovely waterfront. Makes every effort to entice you to buy beautiful things you don’t need. These are well-made crafts. Charming houses. A bit noisy with most cafes playing loud music, although I found one playing delightful piano jazz and I lingered there. A few hours in town was enough for me, though, and I was glad I stayed a few km away.
the El Piedra climb was not so hard; just go early in the morning, to be able to climb the stairs at your own pace. The city is filled with souveniershops and restaurants. it is very colourfull and had a lot of festival like activities during the weekend. Do book a private boat with a captain, this is much more fun than a crowed touristic boat; and not that much more expensive...! I would not do a day trip to Guatape; it is way more relaxing to stay here for 3 days and realy enjoy the view / nature / lake.
Guatape is a super little place. I was very happy there for a few days. I think a few days is enough though. You must take a trip to En Peńol (The Rock). Avoid the Tuc Tuc's they will try and rip you off if you don't speak the language. I wasn't hugely impressed with the food available up there either. Better off to eat outside of the Rock. To get around Guatape, use the buses that pass every 20 mins or so or walk. I took a bus out of Medellin which was inexpensive. To return a took a Taxi which was quicker, but I found the journey made me a bit travel sick. Colombian drivers (Bus or Taxi) don't tend to hang around. Be prepared for an experience in itself with that! The little town is quiet (as of June 2023) after 9pm. It seems like a lot of people retire to their homes/hotels after that. Note that it maybe totally different at weekends. I was a mid week visitor. I'm glad I went. And you will be when you go.
Definitely worth checking out. Obvious things like El Penon (the monolith), plenty of other stuff that is less touristy/tourist package oriented. Eg check out the El Cristalino Casades (waterfalls) - nice 1 1/2 to/from town hike up through the jungle to some fantastic waterfalls that you can easily do on your own if you are an experienced walker.
Lots of choices of restaurants and activities. Hiking, boat rides, climbing the Pena, walk to the waterfalls etc. Doesn't seem to be much night-life. I like to dance. I think there were a few bars, but I went home early because it was pouring rain almost every night. Adorable little town with really nice people but I can only walk around and look in shops for a day or two. Good food, lots of choices of restaurants.
Guatapé
Exceptional concept with an incredible connection to nature. The room feels very private and surrounded by jungle, yet you have all the comforts of a luxury hotel. We loved all the little details in the decor, everything is very comfortable. The jaccuzi was the highlight and lovely to use when the night air gets colder. The grill concept is nice and it was rewarding to cook in the middle of nature. Bed was lovely, great linens. Hot shower and hot jaccuzi. The concierge / belldesk staff is great, very hospitable and hardworking.
Guatapé
We liked El Trebol very much! Its a perfect space to relax, rest and get inspired by the wonderful view of Guatape. The facilities were very comfortable and a lot of great details to make the staying perfect! The breakfast was delicious and abundant with a lot of options to choose from. Luz was always attentive to all of our requirements by giving an immediate answer, a lot of activities to make in the place. I completely recommend this place and I am waiting to come back and stay for a few days chilling there.
Guatapé
The owner is a very nice old women. She is very cute and let us put our bag all day even if we did the check-out. When you arrive, the decorations outside are very cute, full of colors. If you don't need a big hotel and you just use the place to sleep, it is a very good place for the price you pay. Close to everything in the middle of Guatape small town. There is also a small patio outside so you can open the big door (and believe me you want because of the humidity). Nice place for a night.
Guatapé
Great location, we were able to walk everywhere - just a few minute walk from the bus station! The private room was really good value for money, we had a tv, private bathroom, blanket, towels, soap, hot water etc. Very quiet in the hostel which was perfect - away from the noise of the other streets. The shared kitchen was good, had all the utensils we needed and had a lovely view of Guatapé. The staff were really friendly too, I’d definitely recommend staying here!
La Magdalena is a boutique hotel on a secluded peninsula in the Reserva de Guatape lake. It is an impressive view and generally well designed. Isolated by design, the hotel is a nice alternative for those looking to just get away from the normal world. Restaurant workers tried very hard and always were pleasant.
Quiet, very relaxing, picturesque and very nice facilities. Away from the relative bustle of Peñol and Guatapé but close enough to easily get to both. Very friendly and accommodating staff. About an hour from Medellin. Easily would return, already recommended to family looking to possibly go to Guatapé.
Guatapé
This was such a nice place to stay in Guatape. The young girl who takes care of it is so sweet and really made us feel welcome. The kitchen is well equipped and the room was clean and comfortable. It's in a nice location because it's away from the noise but close enough to walk to the main town.
The staff is amazing and very helpful. Everyone is very pleasant and works hard to make their guests feel comfortable. The family cabin was comfortable. Located right next to El Penon. The views are beautiful from everywhere in the hotel and we really liked hanging out on the hammocks
Trying to get to the hotel is quite an adventure. But all properties are in the guatape area. But it’s worth the trek down the narrow roads up and down the hills. The location is beautiful on a hill above the water. The staff are very nice and bi-lingual. Good food also.
Guatapé
Great location, amazing host, decent sized and well priced. The host/ property manager has a number of very well rated accommodations in Guatape and is very customer orientated so don't hesitate to contact him and book a place with him.
Guatapé
The property is just a short ride in Motochiva to Guatapé or La Piedra. The view of the “embalse de Guatapé” and La Piedra from this location is impressive. Modern, well furnished and the outside areas is just what you need to unwind and relax.
Great Hotel in the center of Guatapé. The room was very clean, the shower has hot water and there is WiFi for free. And on top: the hotel is family driven and they were so nice and helpful it felt like visiting relatives :)
it’s directly next to the rock of Guatape, so you can immediately walk from the hotel to the rock. also the sunrise is AMAZING, if you wake up very early. also the hotel is very calm and surrounded by nature.
One of the best hotels I have ever stayed. The view is spectacular, beautiful rooms, jacuzzi with fire place, food is delicious and staff is very helpful and friendly! I loved everything about my stay.
Great place to stay in Guatape. Outside of the town, so nice and quiet after sunset. The property is overlooking the rock in the distance. Great shared kitchen as well. Would recommend.
It had very nice amenities and views. It was easy to access Guatapé and la piedra but if you wished you could stay on property the whole time and have everything you needed.
It's very good value but a bit run down. Location is nice (Guatape is very small, so every location is good 😊).
The staff was nice and helpful. They offer many activities. Walking distance from the centre of Guatapé.
Amazing stay on this beautiful hotel, great environment, services on point and 100% coming back.
It is in the center of Guatapé and the staff is very friendly
