There was free parking for our car in the hotel yard. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival. The room was very comfortable. Dinner on the hotel restaurant's terrace was absolutely excellent, and the service was very friendly. Despite the large number of diners, the staff regularly checked in to see if everything was okay and if we needed anything else. Breakfast was just as amazing: everything you could imagine was available, and much more! If we ever travel to the area again, we will definitely stay here.

Trier was founded by the Romans, and is considered Germany's oldest still extant city (although that honour is contested by other German cities). The Trier Old Town is charming, with plenty of shopping, cafes and restaurants, and for anyone of a historical bent, there are several Roman excavations, as well as the Porta Nigra, the old Roman city gate.

Trier dates back to the Roman era, and it has been argued (but not agreed) that it is the oldest still-extant city in Germany. There are a number of interesting Roman excavations, including a bath and a amphitheatre, as well as the Porta Nigra city gate. In addition to being the birthplace of Karl Marx, Trier offers plenty of shopping and dining options and, being located in the Moselle region near the Luxembourg border, there's plenty to experience. When hunger strikes, head for the Kartoffel-Kiste restaurant, and try the "Kappes Teerdisch", a local speciality composed of mashed potatoes mixed with sauerkraut (which is a lot more delicious than it sounds).

Very pretty old town with lots of history! We had a great meal in Donna Mia, an Italian in the square. I had the rigatoni mango chicken & it's the best pasta meal I think I have ever tasted! My husband enjoyed an Americana pizza. The beer was great too! The one disappointed we had was the approach from the tourist information center near the porta nigra. We went in to ask advice for how to best spend the afternoon we had in trier & the lady just said take a map. No offer of advice or friendly manner. We have travelled to many places over Europe this holiday & the tourist information centres have all been absolutely brilliant & so willing to share their knowledge of their areas so it was disappointing to experience this on our very last stop before going back to the UK. We walked to the Roman Baths, which took a chunk of our limited time in Trier to find they closed at 4.30. The tourist info office could have alerted us to this fact for eg.

Nice place, good roman sites, near luxembourg castles so good for sightseeing. I would recommend for other solo female travellers to stick to the tourist areas. Beyond the Marx museum (and around there) is a dodgy area to get lost in (I had to leg it at one point), so if you're not a walker, you're not fit and you're alone, it is best to take the little road train to the tourists points. Treve can be done in a day depending on when you arrive so use it as a base to see the surrounding areas - also gas up your car in luxembourg as it is cheaper to do so there.

THe city is filled with wondefull buildings from roman times to roccoco and is a marvel for architectural wonders seekers. The typical german gastronomy can be tested at the wirtzhaus Zur Glöck, a wonderfull place filled with history, and an amazing cellar in the underground. The Roman ruins, the cathedral complex, the river valley, the vineyards, the archeological museum, this place is filled with interesting places to discover during a weekend. Maybe somethin ga bit pricey and according to my opinion not so worthy would be the little touristic train crossing the city center.

One of the most important towns in Germany around the Roman and old medieval times, a lot of ancient buildings are scattered throughout old town, from Roman Baths, the Porta Nigra city gate to the amphitheatre and the Romanesque cathedral. The museums contain old artefacts such as a ceiling from an old Roman palace from the era of Constantine (that is even rare to find in Rome itself). The town is still a tad quiet, but with enough options for good food. Should you be done with Trier quickly, it takes less than an hour to get to Luxembourg, old castles can be reached within 1 1/2 hours too, even to Metz you can get within 90 minutes. So lots of options for day trips too.

We broke our journey back to the UK to stay one night in Trier as it had been recommended by a friend who is very knowledgeable on Roman history. Although the weather was atrocious we still managed to enjoy the sites and chose a delightful meal at one of several restaurants within the pedestrianised area

My main goal was to visit a Bundesliga basketball game at the Arena. It was great experience. I enjoyed my time in old town. It's good to have a trip by local old town train. You do get overview of a history and gives you a hint what to explore for more. Great view place of Trier is at Villa Weisshouse. The cathedral in old town is worth to visit and see. The best coffee in town is at Balott (old town)! After you try it you keep coming back. Old town is also good for shopping, enjoying fresh pastries as there are lot of bakeries.

suited us, as history buffs, lots to see - Roman, medieval and later. recommend the hop on hop off bus for initial orientation (50 mins) also lots of restaurants at different price points, lots of place to have a nice drink. Three days was good.

Dynamic city with many options for visiting, walking, food or drink. The size of the city is ideal to only walk. Many parking are available (18 Euros per day) to avoid using your car. Once at the central square all the historic places can be reached within 5 to 10mn. On top, the city can be the starting point for the Mosel valley.

Trier, as Germany's oldest city is beautiful. Shabby with graffitti in some areas, which is normal for any city, and glorious - the Kaiserthermen, Porte Nigra and historical in others - Karl Marx' house. There's a wide selection of shops to suit all tastes and I found the Irish Pub, and another bar with a good selection of food to suit all tastes. The accessibility of city tours was good, although I would recommend the little yellow road train over the bus, as the audio commentary of what you were seeing from the bus sometimes did not synchronise with the audio commentary. Also - the tour bus takes 50 minutes, whereas the little yellow road train takes longer and I think is more detailed for those ( such as me] who like this stuff. The Basilika was stunning, and parking anywhere in the city - there are many car parks - so - that was easy. A lovely, historical, beautiful city perfectly nestled in the valley with the Mosel River just at hand.

This was our second visit to Trier, the first was some ten years ago in the summer. This time, we discovered the tourist "road train" which takes you on a three quarters of an hour sight seeing tour around the town. Fantastic way to view the town before setting out on foot.

The main problem for us was the fact that parking is difficult and extremely expensive. When having bikes withe you , its difficult to find no pay parking away from the centre. On restauarants , quite a few serve acceptable simple menues, but price wise they often go over the top. Even simple lunch facilities in shopping centres are over the top with pricing ans we have seen visitors after seeing the menue walking out and you can guess why. Bike path river side is fine

Trier has many opportunities: for city walks, visiting historical buildings and churches, shopping and eating as well for long hikes in the surrounding forests. Cycling in the area, flat along the rivers or more demanding in the hills is a recommended activity.

Trier isn't a big town, so is easily accessible to explore on foot. There are many Roman ruins to see and do take advantage of the sight-seeing train, which gives an excellent overview of all the points of interest with commentary in German, English and French. Some hotels also offer walking tours of the hightlights.

Lovely pleasant city with ambience and lots of history. Amazing city space where one can enjoy taking a walk or relaxing in a park. I don't know how some people spend only 1 day or half a day in Trier. There're so many museums in Trier and around the city that a minimum of 3 days is needed to see most of the places of interest. I spent 8 days in Trier and would gladly return. If I had more time in Trier, I would explore more of Luxembourg. I am glad I found accommodation in a quiet neighbourhood, away from the center.

A lovely, historic city. Lots of old Roman ruins & the beautiful buildings give a magical feel to the place. We visited for the Christmas market which was fabulous, busy on Saturday night but less so on other nights & earlier in the day. Also took the 45 min train trip to Luxembourg City & spent a few hours at the Christmas market there. Only 10 Euro return train fare & free public transport in Luxembourg.

Trier is mainly known for its Roman ruins,and if you go there for that reason you won't be disappointed. Be prepared to pay for everything though. The town is less suited for hiking in the surroundings, as these are only accessible by crossing busy roads. For that you're better off visiting other nearby German towns, like Koblenz.

Trier claims to be Germany's oldest city and is designated a UNESCO heritage site on account of its well-preserved Roman remains and impressive mediaeval Cathedral and adjacent church of Our Lady. It has an attractive central square with typical German architecture and nice riverside walks along the Mosel: it is a popular stopping point for River Cruises, so the sights can get busy when several boats are moored up, leading to a sudden influx of visitors. There's a reasonable range of places to eat (it has a large student population.

We (a Danish family of four travelling Germany and France by train) found the city of Trier to be an awful experience: run-down, chaotic, and dominated by ugly plastic facades and a total lack of city-planning (in spite of the few carefully renovated town houses), including the area around the lone and tired Porta Nigra, crammed in between ugly brand stores, burger joints etc.), and including the lack of access to the river, where heavy traffic dominates. Add poor food, and a general sense of desillusion and lack of aesthetic ambition (as opposed to the town of Heidelberg, for example). We left Trier after one night (having booked, and thus having to pay for, two) and went to our next stop in Metz, France a day earlier than planned. What a change! Stay well away from Trier - if looking for historical sights and a coherent medieval town, go to absolutely beautiful Metz (France), instead.

We enjoyed our stay in Trier, it is a cool city to visit for a few days and much in a drive's reach, so we had a wonderful time. We did a lot of walking, 19000 steps to be exact per day, so one can imagine we saw a lot in our travels and experiences were wonderful. There are a few nice restaurants on a walk reach with a river view and the overall accommodation atmosphere is relaxing, chill down and enjoy. Trier, as the oldest city in germany is a nice place to see.

The hotel was next to the main railway station in Trier but this did not detract from the experience. The room was clean & perfectly adequate for 1 nights stay passing through Trier. It was within walking distance of the city centre & provided a secure parking space for our car (which we had to pay extra for which is a shame). We didn't have breakfast so unable to comment on this. Reception staff polite & helpful.l
