The City of Popes
Located in Southern France, Avignon is the largest capital of the department of Vaucluse. Classified as a UNESCO world Heritage Site, the charming city centre is home to the palace of the popes, Rocher des Doms, and the bridge of Avignon.
The historic Palais des Papes is one of the most significant medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Set within a square with the same name, the Papal Palace is an important tourist attraction where you can see the pope’s private chambers and frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti.
Le Pont d’Avignon was built in the Middle Ages and, according to the legend, a young shepherd called Benezet was inspired by angels to build the bridge. The children’s song "Sur Le Pont D'Avignon" is now famous all over the world.
The beautiful gardens of Rocher des Doms are ideal for a promenade or picnic. Featuring a large pond, swans, ducks and lush vegetation, this place is perfect for relaxing moments. From the top, you can enjoy the views of the Rhône.

Avignon is a cute little town in the South of France. We had so much fun visiting we wish we had more than one day. There were a few things to see, the museum, the castle and the bridge. The people are very friendly.

I have been to Avignon many times, I feel safe there and...
I have been to Avignon many times, I feel safe there and there is so much to quietly enjoy apart from the tourist attractions e.g. Pope's Palace, Pont d'Avignon, Ile de Barthelasse. During the Festival I imagine it's very lively!
There are cafes and restaurants of all descriptions in every little square. Le Gout du Jour is high quality. Les Halles, the covered market, is a great place when self-catering. The Rue des Teinturiers is a favourite street even now it's missing half its beautiful plane trees.
If your booking is within the city walls (Intra Muros) everything is in walking distance, and level. It's a lovely town to simply wander in and enjoy the architecture, street art, quirky corners.
Plenty of buses and trains if you ever want to explore outside.

The historic sites - Palace & gardens particularly, a particularly beautiful city. It’s also very convenient for visiting Villeneuve-lès-Avignon & orher places such as Arles & L’Isle sur La Sorgue. As it sits on the Rhone, Avignon has plenty of mosquitoes, so come prepared!

Lovely city full of history, easily walking with lots of lovely restaurants. Palais des papes and pont d’ Avignon are a must see . Ate at the Brasserie des arts in the square excellent food and service.

The main reason for this short trip was to travel on the TGV...
The main reason for this short trip was to travel on the TGV (from Paris and back) so this really was a whistle-stop 'tour'. As a result we didn't really see Avignon except from the taxi as we went from the station to the hotel and back again the next day. Although our taxi did detour via the famous Pont d'Avignon so we could see what it's all about (which wasn't very much I thought). In the evening, after we'd arrived, we went looking for a nice restaurant - not as straightforward as one might want. There's an Irish pub (!) just along from the hotel. Why?? However, after having seen what was on offer by way of eating places (not many where we were and they were disappointing) we found a nice pizza place (but offering more than just pizzas) right by the hotel - excellent service too. The taxi service the hotel got for us in the morning was good - friendly young driver. The TGV station is quite something! Very modern and quite attractive architectural design with excellent signage.

We did the town and neighbouring Villeneuve in 2 days but there are enough lovely towns nearby to fill a two week stay either by public transport, tour bus or car.

We arrived by car - the car park is right in the centre of Avignon and the hotel very near. So lovely here. Our room overlooked the city centre but it was fairly quiet. The air conditioning worked fine and kept us cool during a particularly vicious heatwave. Hi tech drinking water machines close to our rooms.
The funny and helpful Ioannes (spelling sorry!?) greeted us on reception - a living legend. Mercure!, give him a raise!

To start off it is absolutely beautiful in the courtyard, lovely furnishings inside and amazing location. But some of the best part are the kind hosts. Richard came to let us in on the day and put things down on the map for us to go and see. Whenever I had a question he would go out of his way to help us. 5 stars for everything - thank you!!

This 2 bedroom apartment was huge with large double beds in both bedrooms. Beds were very comfortable. The washing machine was very handy. Very big bathroom with separate wc. Air conditioning throughout which worked well. Over 3 weeks in France we stayed in 7 different places and this was easily the best.
