InterContinental Marseille - Hotel Dieu, an IHG Hotel, hotel in Marseille

InterContinental Marseille - Hotel Dieu is set in a superb 18th century building in the historic quarter of Marseille, 350 metres from the Old Port. WiFi access is available.

We enjoyed a decent enough stay in this hotel which is well positioned close to the old port of Marseille, it has plenty of staff in all departments to deal with demand and thoughtful security when necessary. The room was well appointed and comfortable although « room with a harbour view » was a very generous description.

FAQs about hotels in Marseille

A City Built from the Sea

Founded by the Phocaeans in 600 B.C., the long history of Marseille has produced an interesting and dynamic port-side city bursting with cultural diversity. Watch the fishermen sell their catch by auction at Vieux Harbour or cruise along the Corniche roads with views of the Calanques, dramatic rocky inlets to the sea.

The le Cours Julien and la Plaine areas provide a trendy hangout and every Thursday and Saturday morning the Plaine market offers its various wares. This is the area to buy a novel from a hip bookshop or watch your kids in one of the playgrounds. There are also plentiful cafes to sip a cappuccino and watch the world go by.

If a culture packed vacation is on the agenda, the Musée d'Archéologie Méditerranéenne, Notre Dame de la Garde and Palais Longchamp won’t disappoint. The unique Unité d'Habitation, designed by famous architect Le Corbusier, contains everything from a shopping street to housing and has spectacular views of the terracotta landscape that makes Marseille so distinctive.

Marseille is a short trip from Marseille Provence Airport, so your holiday can start promptly. With over 100 hotels and apartments available, Booking.com is the perfect place find the great accommodation and start your journey in the largest city on the Côte d'Azur.

A lot of people who have never been to Marseille think its just a rough and ready port town with nothing to offer. It couldn't be more different, it has an eclectic mix of all walks of life making it a vibrant and lively city. It is also perfectly situated as a center to visit further afield in provence as we did. The rail network serves all the top places to see and visit. There are an abundance of places to eat from all budgets, from 3 euro hole in the wall establishments to michelin star restaurants. Our viset coincided with bastille day which had a fantastic free firework display over the old port. And its only a 2 hour flight from the UK.

A horrible place to stay in , a waste of money, it really needs a big Renovation as it’s deteriorating day by day. Insects in the room, shower leaking , door not shutting, rooms smell, lights not working, I do not recommend this hotel at all and will not come back again. 22/7/24

My first return trip to Marseille since I worked there 40...

My first return trip to Marseille since I worked there 40 years ago, so I was expecting some changes. The biggest of these is the shear number of restaurants, cafes and bars around the Vieux Port area, some of which are theme pubs designed to appeal to English visitors. In a conversation with a taxi driver, it seems the explosion in hospitality venues dates from 10-15 years ago when the city first started appearing as a stop on cruise ship itineraries. For me, this is a change for the worse. It has robbed Marseille of its essential character as an unpretentious French Mediterranean city with a strong north African influence that gave no more than a passing nod to tourism. Nonetheless, there are some good changes too - such as the transformation of Le Panier from a slightly dodgy area that you steered clear of, especially at night, to a quaint neighborhood of narrow cobbled streets full of interesting local shops and cafes. Overall, it's still well worth visiting for the beautiful street architecture, the stunning views from Notre Dame de la Garde and the Palais du Pharo, and the intense vibe.

The vieux port, the museums and boat trips are 'musts'. There are several fairly economic restaurants in the vicinity of Le Panier. To be honest, we didn't get around the wider city of Marseille. We'd definitely visit Marseille again.

It was great for a visit in a place where tourists are the minority and you actually felt a part of the city you were visiting. Learn basic French to come here and the locals will love you! Beautiful for summer visits to go to the beach and the islands with plenty of bars and different restaurants around.

Lively city with a wide range of differents types of areas...

Lively city with a wide range of differents types of areas such as La Canebière, Le Vieux Port, le Fort SaintJean, Le Panier, the promenade on the cornice Kenedy, La Pointe Rouge beaches, the renovated district La Joliette, the MUCEM museum, L'Estaque, the departmental road La Ginest leading to Cassis city is breathtaking. Le Vieux Port: emblematic place worth visiting once in one's lifetime, flanked with large selection a restaurants on the port and on the square Cour d'Estienne d'Orves, with different qualities of food and prices. La Canebière: famous avenue, but over time has lost its prestigious boutiques with instea dirty front of houses and too many low-quality stores. La Panier : this is the oldest district of the city where to go for a walk through its small streets and to watch houses and walls widely covered with street paintings and tags, which gives a colourful atmosphere. Unfortunately, watch out where you go because some side streets are a bit dodgy and then one might feel a little uncomfortable when walking through. Le Prado : promenade and park on the seaside with long beaches for sun beathing, lots of bars and restos facing the beach on the pedestrian zone. Shopping : many shops of diffent quality and prices everywhere in town, rye Paradis has many high-end boutiques, whereas rye Saint Fereol is more low-budget, both streets are parallel to each other with again lots of other shops in between MYCEM museum: modern spacious nice museum worth visiting, is facing the sea and easy to get to.
