FAQs about hotels in Provence

The Picturesque Land of Lavender and Pastis

With lavender meadows and limestone soils covered with garrigue, the beautiful Provence smells of herbs, flowers and warm mistral winds. This vast French region spreads along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea from the wetlands of Camarque to the peaks of the Maritime Alps.

Famous for its cuisine, picturesque villages and the weather, Provence is one of France’s most popular holiday destinations. People come here to relax under the stunning blue skies and enjoy a slower life pace over a glass of pastis or local wine.

But don’t be mistaken, Provence is as much about the bustling cities as it is about its quiet countryside. Make sure you pay a visit the 2nd largest French city, Marseille, the forever glamorous Cannes or the popular resort of Nice. All of them offer plenty of sightseeing attractions, cultural events and fine dining venues.

For a breath of art and history, stop in Arles, a town full of Roman remains and Van Gogh’s famous artistic inspiration, or Avignon, best known for the stunning Gothic Palace of the Popes - the seat for Western Christianity during the 14th century.

From blue sea to rocky mountains, Provence has something for everyone’s taste. So does Booking.com: over 2000 properties in the region, from hotels with pools to cosy bed & breakfasts for your perfect Provence holiday.

Everything!!!! First thing I’d like to say is that, as we set off for the campsite our satnav said we will arrive at 1600hrs. Last check-in on the campsite was 1800hrs so all was good! Throughout the journey, traffic was heavy with everyone heading South for the Summer. I sent a message to the owner and he told me he would wait for me until 1900hrs. Then there was an accident and huge delays which meant we didn’t arrive at the site until 2230hrs. The husband and wife team were waiting for us and greeted us with open arms and a bottle of rosé wine to welcome us to their site. I have also read other reviews that have stated the site is on a main road and it’s noisy….. we genuinely forgot that we were close to the road. Occasionally we would hear a loud motorbike but didn’t feel loud to us at all. Maybe if you live somewhere quiet and rural you would not like the main road, it didn’t bother us at all. We got fresh bread delivered early morning, there is a pool table in reception. There is a little shop for essentials at reception. There is a kids play area and a gorgeous peaceful pool with no deep end so it feels safe for kids but also great for swimming lengths for fitness too. There is a free shuttle bus into town all day every day. We stayed in a lovely 3 double bedroom caravan which was perfect - very clean and all the utilities needed. The outdoor seating area on the caravan was huge; half sheltered and half not. I read a previous review about the caravans being close together and you can hear everything your neighbours are saying. This is not true. Unless you have very noisy neighbours. Yes the caravans are quite close but the outdoor tables and chairs are at opposite end to your neighbours so we didn’t hear any of our neighbours conversations. This isn’t a huge busy campsite; it is a small, personal campsite which is perfectly situated 10 minutes drive from Cassis and within short distance of some of the biggest cities on the south coast of France.

An exceptional hotel, situated in its own vineyard. The location is fabulous, the food as very good and the wine of course is from their own production. Our stay included a complementary wine tasting in the vineyard shop (across the road). The Manager went out of her way to ensure all food requests were met. The gardens are beautiful and well kept, and there is a swimming pool for guests. The water was a little warmer than my taste, but I am sure most guests will like it that way. We stayed for four nights

Attentive staff, wonderful location, clear, quiet, nice guests, excellent restaurants and good. While the hotel was full, it never felt busy, a very impressive accomplishment. We'd heard it's on the up and up and that was very much our experience. There were some really great neighborhoods, great shopping, great food. The best part of it all for us three 60-something, active travelers was the Blue Evasion boat tour. We swam in the Calanques and loved every minute of our time on board and in the water. In the future, we'd spend about a day, day and a half there, but do more in the surrounding areas like Aix and Arles. Definitely worth seeing the churches, shops, museums - but stay on the water!!

I have been to Avignon many times, I feel safe there and there is so much to quietly enjoy apart from the tourist attractions e.g. Pope's Palace, Pont d'Avignon, Ile de Barthelasse. During the Festival I imagine it's very lively! There are cafes and restaurants of all descriptions in every little square. Le Gout du Jour is high quality. Les Halles, the covered market, is a great place when self-catering. The Rue des Teinturiers is a favourite street even now it's missing half its beautiful plane trees. If your booking is within the city walls (Intra Muros) everything is in walking distance, and level. It's a lovely town to simply wander in and enjoy the architecture, street art, quirky corners. Plenty of buses and trains if you ever want to explore outside.

My first accomodation was a fraud and booking did not help me at all, so I lost my money. Thatswhy I would rather go home and in the next time I will avoid booking also as many places as I can. The promised air conditioning did not work, I can not add anything to my review (not the pics and nothing) bed and everything was dirty but no help from booking so the houseowner kept my money:(

Beautiful little city with lots of history and important sites to visit. Delightful little streets full of character and charm. It’s easy to trace the time that Van Gogh lived there. Excellent restaurants with some serving cheaper menus such as the Creperie next to the Arles Amphitheatre. I even managed a bus ride to St Remy (704 - stop Republic) for a very cheap price. The location on the Rhone is also a bonus. Next time I will visit the Camargue.

The town streets are free of litter and every street is beautiful… lovely boutique shops, an abundance of quaint restaurants. It is a happy decadent space full of excited people. Nothing is cheap, but everything is of good quality. The Saturday/Tuesday market is AMAZING. Good quality items & food. Not a “made in China” market. There are a couple of free public beaches, otherwise the beach clubs….. which are very difficult to contact to reserve a beach day….I would advise booking beach club days before you arrive! For a short stay I would say minimum four nights, a week is a good timespan. Traffic is horrendous… I would not recommend a hired car. Rather walk, Bolt, hire a scooter.

We enjoyed watching the boats in the marina the best - they were setting up for an Ocean 50+ sailing race. The walks along the coastline go for as long as you like - in either direction. The old town was small, shops were nice. Ferry ride to St Tropez a must so, though note we went in April so no crowds. We had a kitchen so we only went out to dinner once. Le Jardin - it was wonderful. Jacques our host at Villa les Cades made the reservations for us!!!
