FAQs about hotels in Bayeux

Rich History and Medieval Beauty

Bayeux is a medieval French town in the region of Lower Normandy, known for the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry which depicts scenes from the conquest of England by William the Conquerer in 1066. Registered by UNESCO as ‘Memory of the World’, this historic tapestry is 70 metres long and gives us information about the way of life in the Middle Ages.

The Norman-Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral has impressive stained glass windows, bas-relief sculptures and a crypt with 15th-century frescoes beneath its floor. Consecrated in 1077, this structure is the place where the Bayeux Tapestry was kept for about seven centuries.

Opened in 1864, the botanical garden of Bayeux, which is home to the popular Weeping Beech tree and about 400 more trees, is open daily for free. You can wander around the picturesque old part of the city or visit the vibrant city centre with the modern shops and restaurants.

Crossed by the Aure River and situated on the train route to Paris, Bayeux is 7 km from the coast of the English Channel and 20 km from Caen – Carpiquet Airport. Booking.com will help you find the right hotel, guest house or apartment in Bayeux and the city of Caen.

Bayeux is a lovely town and very central to all of the D Day beaches and many other interesting places related to WW2. The town is not too big so a lot can be seen in a reasonable space of time. The British memorial cemetery there is one of the most poignant I visited.

Our tour of the D. day beaches was very interesting and moving. The Norte Dame Cathedral de Bayeux was a highlight of the city as well as the tour of the Tapestry. Restaurants were all outstanding. We would love to go back.

Loved this town because it's like going back in time, when people aren't in a hurry and take pride in their town and their food, culture, etc. Proud that they survivied WW2, and the importance to educating their children about it. Had a lovely tour about that. Went to great restaurants that our hotel Hotel D'Argouges recommended for us. Le Pommier and Le Volet Qui Penche!! Like to go back when it's warmer to see the beautiful flowers in bloom, we went 3/8, so I would like to go back in April sometime.

Do not stay here, this hotel is unkept, dirty, run down, and in dire need of maintenance. The room was not what we booked, so we were forced into a tiny cramped room. I had to sleep with half of the lamp hanging over the bed. The window wouldn’t close, we were in the second floor but still unsafe

Located not far from Bayeux which is a beautiful town in Normandy. Our room was comfortable, clean and quiet. We had a lovely breakfast every morning. Although I would have liked to perhaps have been offered a boiled egg, or perhaps yoghurt and fruit. However the bread, cheese and ham was good. Nathalie, the owner was friendly and welcoming. And she gave us information on restaurants in the area. This property was the perfect place to base ourselves for our trips to the Normandy beaches and also to Le Mont St Michel.

We loved our stay at Belle Normandy. The location is perfect, with beautiful grounds right on the edge of town, only a five minute walk to the cathedral and all the shops and restaurants. Our kids enjoyed the basketball hoop and would have stayed at the hotel much longer if they could have! The staff were amazing. They were friendly and helpful on recommendations, and they also seem very proud of the hotel, which was renovated from an old school. It is a very special place, and I highly recommend it.

The Hotel Reine Mathilde has a wonderful location. We could walk to the Cathedral, Bayeux Tapestry, the Museum of the Battle of Normandy, and restaurants. The onsite restaurant was a plus. Our room and bathroom were spotlessly clean and the beds were comfortable. With one exception, the staff were kind and helpful. For example, there's no lift in the hotel, but two different staff members carried our luggage up and down the stairs.

The breakfast was superior. There were homemade fruit desserts every morning. There was as much fresh coffee and hot milk for the coffee as we desired. Several croissants and fresh bread for every person. It was truly the best breakfast we've had in our six week trip through France! Thank you, Florence, for your outstanding service and wonderful hosting!
