A visit to the Royal Palace makes history come to life, with...

A visit to the Royal Palace makes history come to life, with personal entree into the lives of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Napoleon Bonaparte and his second wife, and with Napoleon III, and his beautiful Empress Eugénie. Worth it. The small city is also eye opening with its magnificent Hotel de Ville, and some fabulously architected historic mansions, we stumbled across, all in a row on a street not far away.

Loved it.

Loved it. Cheap cycle hire, fabulous easy cycle tracks through the forest, interesting chateau, great figurine museum, lovely restaurants/ cafes/ bars, good cycle to Pierrfonds where there is an excellent Chateau, a few restaurants/cafes, crazy golf and pedalos on the lake. Really interesting and poignant visit to the armistice memorial and museum.

Compiegne is a beautiful city located by the river.

Compiegne is a beautiful city located by the river. Impressive architecture all around. Free parking in most places we visited! Plenty of food choices. Relatively close is the Armistice train wagon well worth a visit.

An elegant small city just two-and-a-quarter hours from...

An elegant small city just two-and-a-quarter hours from Calais, and about 60 minutes north of Paris, Compiegne is certainly worth exploring. It is also a great place to stop off to, or on the way back from, a longer holiday in France.

2 or 3 days would work well

2 or 3 days would work well Plenty to see around the Chateau and its grounds. Hard to get to the Armistice clearing to see the train carriage without your own car, there's no real public transport to it. But exploring the area around there could make an interesting day There's a memorial to Buchenwald that I did not get to. The pedestrianised old town is pleasant to walk around with a great Town Hall.

great bike paths in the forest. the city is not bike-friendly. most of the roads are very bumpy cobblestone. there are interesting places to visit which we didn't get to. favorite spot: chateau de Pierrefonds. lovely town, impressive (if 19th century rebuilt as renaissance chateaux.

Sophie was an excellent host who could not have done anything more to improve our stay. Our room was extremely comfortable with all manner of toiletries provided. The breakfast was typically French and superb. Easy walk into town and explore the beautiful gardens and forests walks. Street parking was plentiful and free with the Hotel on a quiet residential street.
