Unless you haven't noticed there is an international pandemic occurring. One of the negative effects of this has been the closure of boarders in Europe including France. Hence I haven't stayed at this hotel!!!!!!
The medieval festival in September is spectacular. It is wonderful to see 6000 people in elaborate and beautiful costumes enjoying the medieval/renaissance atmoshpere. Dancing, listening to minstrels, walking from venue to venue, interesting theater, seeing the fabrication of medieval arms (arrows, axes, knives), eating, drinking, shopping for costumes, furs, slingshots, arrows, horns, chapeaux), watching falconers - all is so enjoyable! Congratulations to everyone in the town who contributes to this fantastic community spirit!
A traditional old French town with a limited number of attractions, some requiring a climb. We made it up to the Rocher St Michel (268 steps but with strategically located benches), skipped Notre Dame de France (at least the rock has a chapel at the top and not a garish statue), and visited the cathedral. A good day's worth of tourism. Recommend Le Chamarlenc for food.
A fabulous French town with great character and charm. Plenty of old market squares, fountains, shops and wonderful restaurants. My favourite area was the Plots square and the Restaurant du Plots. We stayed in the apartments above the restaurant. Definitely worth a visit for all you French fans!
We were here because it was the end point of a hike of the Jakobsweg in Switerland and Chemin de St. Jacques in France. Had been here once before, but had no time to look around. This time we took four days, and got to see almost everything we wanted to. Get the combined card for all the sights at the Tourist Bureau, then pay close attention to opening hours. Le Puy is a very important stop (or starting point) for Le Chemin de St. Jacques, and its influence is everywhere. You might want to walk out a few km on Le Chemin following the markers to get a feeling for that experience, if you are interested.
Lovely town not too overrun with tourists. We ate the local speciality, saucisson et lentilles, and I could eat it again. The local wines are good. The cathedral complex on the hill is well worth visiting, including the cloister behind, as well as walking through the old parts of town.
Le Puy-en-Velay
Super location for walking around the old city. Very cool 15th century vibe in the place with modern art elements that blended beautifully. Very nice hosts with excellent English. Particularly appreciated a last minute change to a lower level room when the hosts noted our struggles with the circular staircase and baggage. Free parking a block away and good info on how to find it via booking.com email. WiFi good enough for streaming (on lower courtyard level). Basic breakfast.
Le Puy-en-Velay
The location was perfect, and the apartment was well furnished. The modern, (Scandinavian?) design of the kitchen and flooring were greatly appreciated. There was on site laundry available for those who need it, and the hot water for the shower was very quick! While my French was rusty, Madame and I were able to communicate well with a little help from Google Translate. Overall and excellent choice of lodging in Le Puy en Velay!
The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the town. We had a room with a balcony that was on the top floor and had a view. There is a lift and the beds are comfortable. The car park is small so arriving reasonably early would be a good idea if parking is important. Breakfast is fine, we ate dinner in the restaurant, it was reasonable and good value.
The amenities are spare but certainly adequate. There is a garage for 5 euros per night. Personnel are helpful. You can get a discount at 3 eating places including The Tavern at their related hotel several blocks away, and the food is good. I am glad to have tried out an IBIS hotel and will visit another one in the future.
Usual issues with finding the hotel - maps/routes/tel.nos are essential. We got in late- after 7:30pm when the reception normally goes off. Vincent waited over an hour for us to eventually find our way to the Hotel for which we were most grateful.
Le Puy-en-Velay
The apartment is very nicely laid out, with large windows in the main room with nice views and lighting. Very clean. It's a nice space to relax in. Good location, only a few blocks from all the attractions in Le Puy-en-Velay.
Near to the main road for our onward journal but close enough to walk into the centre of Le Puy en Velay. Enough onsite parking for a busy night at the hotel. A good breakfast with plenty of choice, local foods provided.
Staff is just great. No other words. Helpful, friendly and kind. I wish other hotels I stayed at had the same understanding of hospitality. Un grand merci à l'équipe du IBIS Le Puy
