Located in northwestern France, Rennes is the artistic, historical and cultural capital of the Brittany region. It has various styles of architecture, represented by the classical architecture of landmarks such as Rennes City Hall and Palais de Justice, and the colorful and traditional half-timber homes, restaurants and buildings located in the Rue du Chapitre districts.
The Saint-Anne and Champ-Jacquet square areas have medieval and Renaissance buildings scattered throughout the area, along with several traditional cafés, bars and restaurants serving regional and national French cuisine. The fresh food and produce market, Marché des Lices is run by local producers and is open once a week at Place des Lices.
Rennes is home to the picturesque Jardin du Thabor and several golf courses on the outskirts of the city such as Golf de Cesson-Sévigné and Freslonnière Golf Course.
Other must-see attractions are the Musee des Beaux Arts (Museum of Fine Arts), Musée de Bretagne, which showcases the history of the Brittany region, the Notre-Dame en Saint-Mélaine church, and the Opéra de Rennes. Booking.com has several hotel options within Rennes and around the Brittany region.
Only stayed 1 day - could perhaps have added a day. Rennes is very car un-friendly! Lots of cycle lanes, some quite narrow streets; lots of one-way streets that lead nowhere 9so you enter the one=way system and after a couple of minutes you end up back where you started - and there are no optional turns out of this system! That said, once parked and on foot, very pleasant indeed.. We also had very nice weather - late-mid September. Good restaurants - we ate at a creperie for lunch which was good and at an unpreposing restaurant for dinner which was very good,
The city had beautiful screet scape, shops and cafes and an amazing park all within walking distance. The local were friendly and prices generally in eating venues was reasonable. Rennes having a metro is an excellent asset allowing a lot of walking knowing you can double back by train if you plan your exploration direction to suit the metro stops. The staff at the metro station offered very helpful assistance without prompting helping to understand the ticketing system and ticket purchase process.
Vibrant city with many historical landmarks to explore within a compact area which is easily accessible on foot. Some lovely medieval buildings mixed in with more modern buildings. A variety of shops and restaurants of different types to try.
The old town is lovely, but for the oldies a bit tricky with the cobbles. The restaurants seem to be all in the centre - other eateries are pancakes, pizzas, and burgers - not exciting. It is a city for walkers - I am 94 and walking only short distances. My partner is a walker, so no problem. The people are extremely friendly, and it is a young city.
Le Diablo d'Thyme restaurant had great food but we struggled with the French language here and in several other venues. Very few restaurants were open on a Saturday evening or Sunday. Rennes is not really a tourist destination. Top tip is to take the scheduled bus service to Mont St Michel for a day.
I lived in Rennes in 1975 and have often returned for work reasons. My last visit had been pre-covid. The center of town underwent a massive upgrade in the 1980s and is now walkable and charming. The city has many fine restaurants and quality shops, as well as a good art museum and a lively cultural scene [in normal times]. If you have a rental car, you can easily take day trips to many fun locations about an hour's drive away. SNCF has train service to the Dinard-St-Malo area; if you go to that area, by all means take the little boat shuttle between the two cities [much faster than driving]. Dinan, close to them, has amazing city walls and plenty of old houses. Dinard has a lovely seaside walkway and monstrous high tides from the Bay of Mount St Michel. Brittany's seaside is a renowned vacation area, but the inland parts - like Rennes - are underappreciated.
