The The Gildhall is a 16th century thatch cottage with beamed walls and ceilings, winding staircase, uneven floors and an Aga. The cottage is beautiful and so comfortable. Everything you need is supplied. It is very spacious with plenty of comfortable seating in both the living room and dining room. The kitchen was well equipped, the AGA is brilliant, fridge and freezer is massive and a much needed washing machine and dishwasher too. The welcome package was a lovely touch especially the local beers 😀. The beds are so comfortable and there is lots of storage space upstairs. Having 3 bathrooms with 5 adults was a bonus. The outdoor space is beautiful and completely enclosed which meant we didn’t have to worry about the dogs running around and there is A LOT of garden for them to run around in, they loved it. Having the parkland adjacent to the property was great too for a peaceful walk. There are lots of great places to visit nearby and the scenery is stunning. We visited lots of local villages, National Trust properties- Flatford and Lavenham Guildhall, two beaches - Mersea and Frinton-on-Sea, one of our favourite walks was around the Stour Estuary (Wrabness). We went to lovely local pubs & restaurants, The Crown, Carriers Arms, The Anchor, Milsoms, Le Talbooth etc. The property grounds were so well maintained during our stay and all the staff were lovely. Chris was so helpful when we contacted him and even brought a new barbecue over for us to use. We cannot fault anything about our 2 week stay, we loved every minute and I wish we were still there!!!

The Old Post Office is a charming 1650s cottage that has been restored and still maintains the original features. The holiday home features central heating, 42-inch Smart TVs. The property and grounds were amazing. It was clean and comfortable with plenty of character. The place had everything we needed. (Good weather was also thrown in 😊) We took our 2dogs and the walks from the back gate were fantastic.

The Cartlodge is a light and spacious holiday home in the village of Higham. With high vaulted ceilings it features free WiFi. Food and wine basket on arrival, and xmas tree with music was a great welcoming.. the lodge itself was clean, comfy, and easy large enough for our family of 4 children.. being able to let the dogs roam of the lead whilst walking the park was also a pleasure.

The whole place was absolutely spotless and smelt incredible! So much information was provided in a folder from takeaways nearby, to the must see areas. I cannot begin to describe the bed. It was the most heavenly bed I’ve ever slept in! Grainne, her husband, children and 2 adorable dogs were all extremely welcoming and friendly! I have to stay here again!

We had a fantastic stay in Higham and would love to visit again. Would highly recommend if you have a dog as the 15 acres of parkland on your doorstep is fenced off from the road. The village is small and pretty but no pavements so difficult to walk around. There are some amazing walks through the Brett Valley and Dedham Vale and beautiful drives from your doorstep, especially the winding Hadleigh Road via Shelly toward Layham. A visit to Dedham is a must and so is the walk from Dedham to Flatford along the riverbank. We ate a lovely brunch at the Marquis in Layham.
Beautifully secluded gem of a village less than 5 minutes from the A12 - accessible but utterly remote should you wish it to be. Some pictures are of the walk down to Stratford-St-Mary which is about a mile away.
HIgham is a picturesque village, perfect for walking and obviously exploring Constable country. You really need a car to get here, the nearest train station is Manningtree, about 5 mile away, although I believe there are buses from Colchester. There are no facilities in the village itself, but about a 20 minute walk into Stratford St Mary will find you a couple of pubs, a fabulous farmshop, nature trail and tea room/restaurant. and even fine dining.
Higham is a peaceful beautiful spot for a relaxing break. Plenty of lovely places to eat, benches to sit and watch the world go by and near enough to visit Colchester. Lots of countryside, wetlands and parks nearby.
It was out of the way really quiet and nice, very little noise, you may need a car to get there as it is out of the way. great place for walks. lovely old historic buildings everywhere you look would go again.
