It's a mess. Don't come here unless you have to. We came with vehicles: Corrupt traffic cops, a ton of traffic and noise. Not really recommended. Guinea itself on the other hand is very beautiful.
I remember travelling frequently to Sofia in Bulgaria in the early nineties, there was a large advertisement in the airport arrivals that said You're in luck, there's a Sheraton here, well if you have to travel to Conakry and this wasn't a holiday for me, you are also in luck, there is a Sheraton. I don't think I've ever had a bad experience in a Sheraton but this one is really good. It's new, the staff are friendly, attentive and look after you. All the rooms have a sea view (sadly the ocean here is rather polluted with rubbish and there isn't a beach) and are well furnished, decorated and cleaned. Certainly use the free airport shuttle, private car with armed security!. If you have to stay in Conakry, I would recommend the Sheraton. Make sure any taxi you use has been approved by the hotel (its then likely to have doors! and seatbelts) I'm told the islands off Conakry are for holidays, the city isn't (my opinion).
I stayed at Grand Hôtel Central GHC 6 nights in Sept. 2017 and had a nice room with a great bed. The hotel was clean and toy experience water and electricity worked good. The A/C was in order. The breakfast at the rooftop restaurant had a great view but small selection of food. I had food at both the Lebanese rooftop and the international Restaurant at the entrance. The hotel is really central located in the middle of everything. I could walk across the street to my partners office. I can recommend this as an good but not exclusive business hotel, central located and good price. Ulf
The only way to get full knowledge of Conakry is to travel there with someone who has local knowledge and understanding (which I did). It is not a place to visit as a tourist as the town is quite overwhelming and trying to drive is quite an alarming experience. There are no road conducts and in my opinion it would be considered a major hazard to even try to attempt self hire drive. To take Taxis becomes an expense as the tourist is always charged more. The landscape away from the vastly spread out city is quite breath taking but not somewhere that you would travel alone as the Gendarmerie can be quite intimidating for tourists as they are looking to be given money to allow the journey to continue. They certainly do not encourage tourists which is a huge shame for Guinea as it could do with as much financial support as possible. My visit was enjoyable as I travelled with knowledge and awareness. I consider myself a "hardened traveller" as I always "stay local" but even I had moments of apprehension. The most at ease place throughout my stay was when at the hotel. That was the Riviera Tauyah Hotel.
Very poor hygiene. Lots of traffic. Difficult sometimes to find a cab ( they call it: Deplacement). And just not much to see/visit. I hear the countryside has much more to offer. May be next trip i will focus more on visiting the more rural areas.
