Cesspool!! Open sewers everywhere. The whole town stinks of human and animal waste. Very dirty, trash everywhere. Hostile environment towards outsiders and tourists. Locals openly abuse animals all the time. Impossible to safely consume any food that is not pre-packaged from a Western brand. Consuming anything local or freshly made carries a high risk of infections, parasites, and diseases. No soap anywhere. Everyone tries to cheat you. Hike with Berastagi Adventures is an exception. The volcano hike was amazing and so beautiful, but there wasn’t much else to do after that. If in a straight couple or a mixed gender group it might be more pleasant to wander around and explore the the town, but as a solo woman or two women it was quite uncomfortable in terms of the amount of attention and harassment we received.
