The Lily of the Lake
Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lough Leane, colourful Killarney is a top Irish tourist destination. The UNESCO-listed Killarney National Park surrounds Muckross House, a stately home sitting in large grounds with a traditional farm.
A tree-lined lane leads to Muckross Abbey, a former Franciscan monastery whose cloisters enclose a tall yew tree. Celtic crosses line the cemetery and beyond is the lake, at the centre of which is a tree-lined outcrop, home of the historic Ross Castle. This 15th-century stone fortress once housed the O’Donoghue clan, one of whom reportedly lives at the bottom of the lough.
More legends envelop the Ring of Kerry – a scenic drive starting from Killarney and supposedly the last place to spot a leprechaun. Gushing Torc waterfall is just one of its fantastic sights.
In Killarney itself, horse-drawn carts roam narrow streets whose Irish pubs offer great nightlife. Impressive St Mary’s Cathedral has a towering spire and somewhat dark interior. The local gaelic football team play at Fitzgerald Stadium, and more sports can be enjoyed at Killarney riding stables and the nearby golf and fishing club. There is also a popular racecourse.

Killarney is a bustling town with plenty of facilities for tourists. Lots of good pubs and restaurants and many had Irish singers/bands in the evenings. Centrally placed to get out and about in the Ring of Kerry and beyond. Amazing scenery, historical sites, mountains and lakes as well as museums and galleries. My recommendation is to stay about 3 nights.
My recommendation is to stay about 3 nights. Do the Ring of Kerry on Day 1 (it's a long day of driving on winding narrow roads. We had poor weather and fog which is beyond anyone's control, but we still enjoyed it, especially at the end when the sun came out to reveal a spectacular view of the valley). Then on Day two, take a day trip to the Dingle Peninsula. Make sure to go see the Muckross Estate nearby Killarney.

Killarney is really a place for tourists but the one thing I noticed was a lot of the restaurants closed at around 21.00 Hrs in the evenings. I thought they might stay open to about 22.00 Hrs at least. I would recommend Quinlan's Fish and Chip, Sea Food Bar on the main street. I really enjoyed the food. Freshly cut chips and Fresh Cod in a beautiful tasting batter. (Again it Closes at 21.00) Did the ring of Kerry Tour and enjoyed it (Costs About €50) and enjoyed the stop offs, especially at the Kells Sheepdog trials display. Killarney is beautiful and very walkable. We loved the adorable town and quick access to the Ring of Kerry and related attractions . Unfortunately the day we scheduled ourselves to see it, we had bad weather. We instead went to Dingle Peninsula where the weather cleared and had a lovely day.
