FAQs about hotels in Killarney

The Lily of the Lake

Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lough Leane, colourful Killarney is a top Irish tourist destination. The UNESCO-listed Killarney National Park surrounds Muckross House, a stately home sitting in large grounds with a traditional farm.

A tree-lined lane leads to Muckross Abbey, a former Franciscan monastery whose cloisters enclose a tall yew tree. Celtic crosses line the cemetery and beyond is the lake, at the centre of which is a tree-lined outcrop, home of the historic Ross Castle. This 15th-century stone fortress once housed the O’Donoghue clan, one of whom reportedly lives at the bottom of the lough.

More legends envelop the Ring of Kerry – a scenic drive starting from Killarney and supposedly the last place to spot a leprechaun. Gushing Torc waterfall is just one of its fantastic sights.

In Killarney itself, horse-drawn carts roam narrow streets whose Irish pubs offer great nightlife. Impressive St Mary’s Cathedral has a towering spire and somewhat dark interior. The local gaelic football team play at Fitzgerald Stadium, and more sports can be enjoyed at Killarney riding stables and the nearby golf and fishing club. There is also a popular racecourse.

Accommodation in Killarney on Booking.com includes 5-star lakeside hotels, B&Bs near the train station and town centre guest houses. All with that trademark Irish hospitality.

The tour of MucKross House was very worthwhile; a huge beautifully furnished house with very attentive, enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides. Muckross Abbey well worth visiting but probably best approached from the carpark in Muckross Road. The Bricin restuarant in the town had excellent food, good service and value.

Killarney is lovely and definitely worth a visit even though the centre is very touristy. It's small so easy to walk around. Several pubs, restaurants and cafés offer traditional Irish meals though burgers and pizzas are taking over. I ate twice in Hannigan's - their seafood chowder and daily roast lunch (different meats every day) are excellent. The Laurels on Main Street had a good menu but I never managed to find it open. A café called Lir near Hannigan's serves really good iced milk shakes. County Kerry is beautiful and an ideal place to explore for nature lovers. The park around Muckross House has native red deer and white-tailed eagles have been reintroduced to Kerry. There is a Puffin Island near the Skellig Islands. The Ring of Kerry coach tour that includes the Skellig route is superb.

Killarney National Park is amazing and a visit to Ross...

Killarney National Park is amazing and a visit to Ross Castle was also nice, but the town of Killarney left a little to be desired. Not nearly as quaint as other towns like Kenmar or Portmagee or even Cork. If you are going to explore the Park and Muckross house etc then yer and it is a great start point for the Ring of Kerry, but the town itself could be skipped.

A beautiful picturesque town surrounded by astounding nature! We took the excursion around the Ring of Kerry, which was organized right from the Tourist Information Office on Beech Street where we happened to stumble on unintentionally. The orientaion in the town is confusing because there are almost no numbers or street names on the houses and our navigator didn't work properly. We only had time to see a little bit of the city center and visit a book store, which is quite big. Overall, we would like to browse more, and we will undoubtedly return here for a longer visit!

A pretty town - very much geared for tourists but in a good way. The surrounding countryside is magnificent with lots of really interesting places, viewpoints, castles, etc. We found the hop-on, hop-off bus tour great for seeing the local sights. We ate in cafes (Celtic Kitchen) and restaurants (great fish restaurant) but also in the bar at our hotel. As with most of Ireland, Killarney is a bit pricey but we want to go back to explore the surrounding area more.

We got a family room on the top floor. The room itself was spacious for 4, the beds were comfy and the bathroom modern. We did not hear the music from the bar below at all, however we did hear the music coming from accross the street. Then again, there is live music everywhere in the central part of the town, and they do stop strictly until 11, so we had good sleeps. We stayed in 4 hotels during our visit to Ireland, this one was the best in money-value, same room standard than the more expensive ones.

This is an amazing property. It is just as stunning as the photos. We couldn’t believe it when we arrived, it’s like a private hotel. The house had everything you could possibly need for a stay. The entire property was spotless and modern. It is a stone throw from the town centre! We’ll definitely be back to visit again!
