The Lily of the Lake
Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lough Leane, colourful Killarney is a top Irish tourist destination. The UNESCO-listed Killarney National Park surrounds Muckross House, a stately home sitting in large grounds with a traditional farm.
A tree-lined lane leads to Muckross Abbey, a former Franciscan monastery whose cloisters enclose a tall yew tree. Celtic crosses line the cemetery and beyond is the lake, at the centre of which is a tree-lined outcrop, home of the historic Ross Castle. This 15th-century stone fortress once housed the O’Donoghue clan, one of whom reportedly lives at the bottom of the lough.

In Killarney itself, horse-drawn carts roam narrow streets whose Irish pubs offer great nightlife. Impressive St Mary’s Cathedral has a towering spire and somewhat dark interior.
