FAQs about hotels in Genoa

Ship Shape and Fancy Free

Right on the Ligurian coast, Genoa features Europe’s largest historic quarter and Italy’s largest seaport. As the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.

By the old port (Porto Antico), there are several bars and restaurants serving the local specialty, pesto. Other Genoese favorites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade, Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighborhood, where colorful boats bob up and down.

The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.

South is the historic quarter with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.

As you approach Genova Airport, look out for the fortresses on the lush hills forming the backbone of the "Superb City." Booking.com has a range of Genoa accommodations, from hotels to apartments and B&Bs.

One of those places “must visit”.

One of those places “must visit”. City needs to be toured at least twice, during day light, and during the evening/night, when the illumination brings different feelings. City centre can be comfortably walk around. And obviously, food and vine … spoiling utterly, irresistible. Rich history, you will see it everywhere.

I liked that Genoa wasn't touristy like other large cities in Italy, it's a much larger city than expected. I wasn't there long, so didn't get to see many attractions, did walk around the city and have lunch. Great for photos!

Genoa is a fascinating city, almost entirely overlooked by tourists (apart from the thousands delivered by the giant cruise liners). Between the 15th and 18th centuries it became fabulously wealthy from international trade and banking as a maritime power. That wealth is displayed in dozens of extraordinary palaces, which together are grouped as a UNESCO World Heritage asset focused on the Via Garibaldi. The Palazzo Reale is a must-see. The wealthy sought to save their souls by endowing an array of wonderful Baroque churches, amongst which the Santissima Annunziata stands out as a truly remarkable example - another must see. Off the main streets the medieval plan survives in the form of a maze of tiny alleys only a few feet wide: fine to explore by day but avoid after dark. Today's Genoa is a bustling modern city with excellent shopping, including a tremendous range of smaller independent stores. Like all sea ports there is a gritty underside under the glamour, which in common with Naples, is all part of the essence of the place.

Our host was very communicative and prepared us well to check in. Once checked in, the flat was gorgeous, whimsical, and full of character. It also had the best amenities of my whole stay in Italy (coffee, tea, etc). We really enjoyed watching Italian shows on the flat's netflix too :) Whether you are staying in Genova for just a night as we were, or whether you are looking to base yourself there for a longer stay, I would strongly recommend the very comfortable Meizon Genova :)

Upgraded to Grand Hotel Savoia (I think the continental is closed during off season, it looked closed from the outside). Grand hotel is a beautiful 5 star hotel next door with old school charm. Lovely ambience, kind staff, huge stylish room, beautiful and clean. An excellent base to explore stunning Genoa. The breakfast was delicious with a good selection. It felt like incredible value for money due to the upgrade.

I asked a woman in the reception for a toothbrush and she didn’t have one by the counter so she literally ran up the stairs to their cleaning tools cabinet and got me one and brought it to my room. That is what i call service. Not so common during my earlier stay in other hotels in Italy, so big shoutout to you
