FAQs about hotels in Palermo

A Symbol of Sicily

Edgy and eclectic, Palermo is a symbol of all that Sicily stands for. From buzzing Vespas to the bustling Vucciria market, it simply brims with life.

Wonderful Palermo Cathedral glows radiantly in the Mediterranean sun. Nearby is the city’s last Sicilian Puppet Theatre, and opposite is a palm-filled park housing Roman mosaics, though the best are in the archaeological museum. At one end is the Norman Palace, a government building home to the fabulous Cappella Palatina whose gold mosaics are absolutely breathtaking.

Equally magnificent are the gold mosaics lining 12th-century Monreale Cathedral on the city’s outskirts. Wander the cloisters and note the varying columns and capitals – each pair is different.

Palermo also has fascinating churches: 2 of the oldest are 12th-century San Giovanni degli Eremeti and San Cataldo, each with red, Islamic-style domes. Gesú Church has an incredible Sicilian Baroque interior, while La Martorana’s frescoes are awe-inspiring. A street away is Quattro Canti, a crossroads with a fountain at each corner.

Other attractions include round Teatro Massimo, Mondello beach and Monte Pellegrino mountain overlooking the sea. You get fabulous views of this picnic spot as you fly into Palermo Airport before heading to your Booking.com accommodation.

Palermo is best described as shabby chic.

Palermo is best described as shabby chic. It is rough around the edges but has a soft centre. It's very buzzy, don't be put off by some of the scare stories regarding petty crime, just be sensible. Use public transport not taxis. Do a street tour, so interesting especially the food one. The Cathedral tour is a must as is the Palazzo Reale and the Cappella Palatina

Palermo is an ancient and fascinating place to visit if you love history. Although its residents seem quite modern there is a definite air of antiquity in the Center, with its narrow cobbled streets and odd mixture of Norman, Arabic and Baroque architecture. In some areas it is not very clean by North American standards but this is easily overlooked when there is so much else to see. Take a guided tour and you will be amazed by the complexity of its past. The food is a wonderful blend of Italian with Arabic, Spanish and Greek influences.

Palermo is a very chilled city with lots to do and see.

Palermo is a very chilled city with lots to do and see. The food is excellent and the people are very friendly. The only downside to the city is how tatty it all is with graffiti and litter on every street which doesn’t seem to bother the locals but, for me, spoilt the overall view of the City. There are also a few beaches nearby which are lovely and if you have a car easy to access

    Lots of history.

Lots of history. Great opera house, close to many ancient ruins. Excellent and inexpensive food and wine. Many cobble stone streets have no lights and can be very slippery during rain. Safe city. The 1/2 day Intro to Palermo walk is a must for first time visitors.

Absolutely loved our stay in Palermo, what a wonderful and exciting city. Many of the main sights were within walkable distance as were the train and bus stations. There were so many places to eat, reasonably priced and fabulous food. We used the public transport to get around and found this relatively easy to do. If we were ever not quite sure about buses etc the local were great at helping out. I could not recommend visiting this city highly enough. We stayed for seven nights but on reflection perhaps should have stayed 4 nights with 3 in another area in Sicily. This is purely because Palermo is so busy and vibrant perhaps we should have matched it with a more laid back area to get the best of both worlds. We will be back though.

Palermo is a beautiful city with so many interesting monuments to visit. It's an easy city to get around. We did a walking tour day 2 of our stay which helped orientate us to the city, good to book ahead. Via Maqueda is the main pedestrianised street and very busy, but if you turn off to streets on left or right, crowds vanish. We very much enjoyed a tour of Teatro Massimo, Palazzo dei Normanni & gardens, Cattedrale di Palermo, Botanic Gardens & so much more. A great city to visit.

We really enjoyed our stay here. It was a nice welcome to Sicily! Christine the host was easy to communicate with and always quick to respond. The check-in was an easy process, and we just took a taxi from the airport on her recommendation as we weren't sure what was the best way to get there. It is truly a lovely apartment, the decor is beautiful and the rooms and balconies are very special. It is in a very walkable location and we just walked everywhere (also a short walk to the main train station).

It was probably the best apartment i 've ever stayed in Italy. Impeccably clean, with everything one may need for a short stay, and really beautifully decorated with antiques and Sicilian ceramics. Its tiny balcony let us have our morning coffee as if we were part of Sicily's every day life! The owners were friendly, polite and helpful. La Giara is centrally situated, near the bus/train station but still in the very centre of the city's historic heart and most sights.

The hospitality, cleanliness, comfort, and host. The place was a happy respite coming from major cities in Italy like Rome and Naples. The free breakfast and pastries were so great to have included. They also helped arrange for a driver to come pick us up from the airport and bring us to the B&B. They were so nice! This was the 9th place we have stayed on our journey across Italy ending with the 5 days in Sicily.
