FAQs about hotels in Sicily

An Island of Intrigue

The largest Italian island, Sicily has long been a place of mystery and intrigue, coveted by civilisations. Its Greek history is most evident at Agrigento whose UNESCO World Heritage-listed Valley of the Temples has amazingly well-preserved Greek temples.

Also important to Greece was Siracusa. Archimedes was born here and there is a theatre and necropolis to explore. However, the most spectacularly located Greek theatre is at Taormina. Set on a hill overlooking the glorious Mediterranean Sea, this theatre points towards Mount Etna smoking away in the distance above Catania. Picturesque Taormina is one of the most popular Sicily resorts and down below there are some wonderful Giardini Naxos hotels on the beach, available on Booking.com.

Another resort boasting some of the best Sicily hotels for families is fabulous Cefalù. Home to a lovely beach, this small town is dramatically located at the foot of a mountain. To the north-west are the Aeolian Islands (also known as the Lipari Islands), volcanic islands with plunging cliffs and secret coves.

Back on the main island, the capital Palermo is a seductive mix of amazing architecture and laidback life. Trapani to the west is known for its salt flats, whereas Messina to the east is where trains drive straight onto the ferry to Reggio Calabria on the Italian mainland.

It is significantly more than a hotel, it is a very large resort, with a completely private beach, a very large swimming pool next to the beach (warning: that swimming pool is not heated, so it was quite cold in May), a Spa complex with a very nice and long indoor (heated) swimming pool, and several also very nice and large spa baths outside (these ones with warm water). The Spa reservation system ensures there are only a few guests at any time, no large crowd, and children aren't authorized in the Spa complex unless the weather is bad. The restaurants were excellent, I particularly recommend to have lunch next to the large outdoor pool, but the other two restaurants and the breakfast are excellent. Very nice room, loved the large private terrace. Everything was top notch. We had a small issue with our shower (rain shower stuck), and it was fixed very promptly. All the staff was super nice. We didn't play golf, but you can use one of the freely available bikes to cycle around the golf course, which is very nice (it is a private complex, so no external car).

This is my second time at this resort. It is so peaceful, surrounded by trees. Beach is amazingly beautiful. Pools- you are spoilt for choice. The animation team is great!!!We had a soft spot for Tommaso, he was so humble and kind and funny ...but truly all of them were great 😁 The staff at the pool bar were always gentle and professional too. Perfect place if you want to relax, especially with kids. Kids clubs are amazing, however kids need to know Italian, as most of the team are Italian speaking only.

We have heard people complaining about the town not being nice, just noisy and beaches run down with the lack of facilities. But this is Sicily. it's supposed to be messy, dirty, chaotic. That's why we love it and keep coming back. If you are after quiet, polished and organised holiday, choose something else.

The visit to the Greek theatre was very special and the arancini in the cafe was delicious. We were delighted to spend a few hours at The Four Seasons and the staff were very attentive. The littke bars were lively and provided the opportunity to meet more travellers. Lack of gluten free menus in general made eating out difficult but we cooked lovely foox at our place.

Very beautiful and so clean! Every corner a picture. We loved getting lost in the small streets! We loved the local delicacies, especially the caponata and the carpaccio of fish with fruits! We savored the granitas ( too many!) and enjoyed a short boat tour around the island and the caves! We even managed to use the local shuttle bus for our short outings. It is a very colorful and happy place! Strongly recommended!

Cefalu is charming and beautiful, we enjoyed strolling the streets tasting the food from vendors and shopping in the shops. We also enjoyed the meals we had in the restaurants we eat in. We loved all the music and singers at night. The beach was insane with many people - we did not go there since we had beach access at our resort.

Trapani was a wonderful destination, and we had a fantastic stay. The city has a truly authentic Sicilian atmosphere and feels much less crowded than some of Sicily's more famous destinations. The historic old town is beautiful to explore, especially in the evening, and the sunsets over the sea are absolutely spectacular. We found several excellent restaurants, plenty of charming cafés and bars, and the prices were very reasonable. Be sure to try the local cannoli and granita – they were some of the best we've ever had! The locals were always friendly and welcoming, making us feel comfortable throughout our stay. The city beaches are great, with a few of them being truly outstanding. We also felt very safe throughout our stay, even when walking around at night, and during the day we had no concerns leaving our belongings on the beach while going for a swim. One of Trapani's biggest advantages is its location. The beautiful hilltop town of Erice is just a short trip away and is absolutely worth visiting. Trapani is also the perfect base for taking a ferry or a boat trip to the stunning Egadi Islands, which was one of the highlights of our holiday. The city itself is very walkable, and one full day is enough to explore its main attractions at a relaxed pace. The only downside was the public transportation, which could be better organized and signposted. Getting a taxi to or from the airport wasn't always straightforward, although it was manageable with a bit of planning. We also couldn't book the airport shuttle at the last minute, so it's worth arranging airport transport well in advance. Overall, Trapani exceeded our expectations, and we would happily visit again.

We were really looking forward to visiting the "European Caribbean", but in the end we left a little disappointed. The town of San Vito Lo Capo itself is very clean compared to many other places in Sicily. It offers a wide variety of bars, restaurants, and attractions, but fortunately, it still does not feel overly touristic or overcrowded. The beach itself has some great advantages. It is very wide, with easy access to shallow, crystal-clear water, making it perfect for families with children. I also appreciated that the beach was cleaned every evening. However, our biggest disappointment was the overcrowded beach, especially during the weekend. The areas marked as "Spiaggia libera" (free beach) are quite limited and become extremely crowded. Next time I would personally avoid visiting this place in July or August. There are plenty of facilities available at private beach clubs, but if you choose the public part of the beach, the situation is much worse. We found no public toilets, no changing cabins, and even showers required an additional payment. I was desperately looking for a toilet, but when I finally found a public one, it was locked and abandoned. I also tried asking nearby restaurants if I could pay to use their toilets, but unfortunately, I was refused. After realizing that thousands of people spend the entire day on the beach without proper access to toilets, it became clear why the nearby park had such an unpleasant smell and why the sea water, which was beautifully clear in the morning, became noticeably less appealing by the afternoon. San Vito Lo Capo has beautiful scenery and great potential, but the lack of basic public facilities on such a popular beach was a major disappointment for us.

Pros: A nice small seaside town and a great base for exploring eastern Sicily. Taormina, Mount Etna, Alcantara Gorges, Catania, and other attractions are all within easy reach. Plenty of restaurants and beaches nearby. Cons: There are only a few large supermarkets. Some streets are not very clean, and the public beaches could be maintained better. Overall, a good destination if you plan to combine beach holidays with sightseeing.

The place is small relative to other cities with similar Sicilian style houses and roads with an easily accessible center of you stay at a property near the center - otherwise mountainous. You need to visit the valey of the temples - a must and do pay the 3 euro to go from the parking to the other side (the top) and then stroll downwards. No good beaches around there,.
