Loved our stay and wish we had longer. Great eating and drinking. Fine fish market. I found the best Enoteca I’d ever been in - great local wine with snacks of pistachio salami, great mini sundried tomato’s, gridding and olives.
The city is scruffy and dirty and the streets are completely full of rubbish and litter. The traffic is chaotic and drivers not only do not stop at crossings, they insult you for even trying to cross in front of them: you take your life in your hands! We stayed near Central Station in order to use rail travel. We should have stayed further out and used the Metro; but we didn't know about it until it was too late to change our booking. Borgo station (on the Metro) is smarter: and that is where we caught the Circum Etnea train - which is a scenic 2-3 hour ride.
Catania disappointed me due to its cleanliness—or rather, the lack thereof. The city seemed perpetually dirty, with litter strewn about the streets. This detracted from what could have been a more enjoyable experience.
The main town is well built but there are a lot of trash in some areas and snells bad.It has a lot of beautiful sights like villa Bellini piazza del Duomo etc and great museums.Good food and sweets and cheerful People.Felt like home.If you are a steak person prepare for a lot of spaghetti so that's what is missing.overall it is great for a week to stay.
The historical city center is very nice, the buildings are beautiful. The city is very crowdy, though. It is super dirty city - the smell of the meat/fish from the markets in the streets is unbearable. The garbage is everywhere. Also apparently they don´t clean after their dogs from the sidewalk. And don´t get me start on their driving - they don´t follow any road traffic rules - they don´t let pedestrians to cross the streets (on the crosswalk). It seems that who is on the crossroad first, has the right of way. Don´t go there by car - you will go crazy.
Awesome place... travel around the city is best by foot and you can see almost the entire place. A trip to Moujt Etna and Taormina would add to the charm of the place if you have just 3-4 days in Catania.
