Palazzo Marletta is a beautiful boutique hotel in the very heart of Catania, just a few steps from the Duomo. The building has history and has been elegantly renovated, combining charm and comfort. The staff were truly amazing – attentive, friendly, and always ready to help. Despite the language barrier, they organized an excursion for me and even helped me get to the mall. My room was cleaned twice a day, which was a wonderful touch. The only downside was that breakfast was à la carte and not a buffet. Overall, the hotel offers a real sense of luxury and personal care.

FAQs about hotels in Catania

A Perfect Combination of Ancient and Modern

Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, at the foot of Mount Etna, Catania is the island’s second largest city. This charming destination features unique Sicilian Baroque architecture, large squares, avenues and a very important port.

On the northern side of the Cathedral Square, the historical Palazzo degli Elefanti houses the Town Hall of Catania. The Elephant Fountain is the city’s symbol and the entrance to the main shopping area. Surrounded by stunning Baroque buildings, Piazza del Duomo is a popular meeting point for tourists and locals.

Dedicated to Saint Agata and built over the Roman Baths of Achilles, the Duomo has an impressive facade that is one of Gia Battista Vaccarini’s masterpieces. The cathedral’s dome dates to 1802, while in the vaulted interior is the grave of the well-known composer Vincenzo Bellini.

Facing the Ionian Sea, this beautiful seaside place is one the hottest Italian cities during the summer. Mount Etna is an active volcano and a nice place for skiing in winter or a trip to the solidified rivers of lava during the rest of the year.

With the busiest airport in Sicily, Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, Catania is easily accessible by numerous European destinations like Munich, Rome and London. You can stay in one of the Catania hotels, guest houses or hostels Booking.com offers.

The city center is compact and very walkable.

The city center is compact and very walkable. The food, restaurants, architecture and sights were fabulous. There is enough to do for several days in city with ruins, castles and marketplaces. And then there is Mt. Etna, not to be missed. Highly recommend a hike up the mountain. A great way to start a trip in Catania is a street food tour to introduce you to the regional cuisine (don't miss the fish market) and set up the rest of the visit with ideas of sights to visit in more depth. Recommended food: Scirocco (fried fish), Canusciuti (arancini), Condorelli (cipollina), Insigne Cafe (cannolo).

It is a big vibrant city with a great open air market and lots of festivities and green space, I am sure there is a lot to do but didnt have time but the food and restaurants were v good. It is a walkable city and has buses to help if needed. I would not take the little train tours through the city. they show you a lot of stuff and give you a good perspective as to where to find things later if you want but they are uncomfortable.

Catania is very effective as a transit hub or a home base to reach the rest of eastern Sicily, but I found it much less appealing to spend multiple days in compared to other, small cities (Noto, Ragusa, Siracusa). Other than Via Etnea, it didn't have the same "old town" immersion feel - stores tended to be more brands/chains rather than independent small businesses. Food was very good and on par with other locations.

Catania is a rough city.

Catania is a rough city. Dirty, with the smell of urine in many of the streets. Rubbish everywhere, and poor shopping options. We stayed one night and that was more than enough. A couple of hours passing through would have been plenty, before moving on to a cleaner and more elegant destination.

Highlights of my trip with adult nephew was organized tour...

Highlights of my trip with adult nephew was organized tour trip to Mt. Etna combined with wine tour. Visit to Taormina was absolutely Bellisimo!!! Visits to Ortigia and Aci Costello for beaches, Parco Archaelogico, Maniace Castle, and Centro Catania were also highlights of our trip. My adult nephew and I stayed in Catania Centro for 8 days and except for organized trip to Mt. Etna combined with wine tour, used public transportation (bus) to travel to different sites. We were too nervous to drive and public transport got us to places we wanted to visit. We did not run out of things to do in 8 days using public transportation. We visited Ortigia beach twice (combined one trip with visit to nearby/adjacent Syracuse), and Aci Costello beach once). Centro Catania offered beautiful architecture, culture, history, wide and clean streets, great food, and some shopping. Crossing streets in Catania felt safe compared to Palermo, although Palermo had its own unique charm and great places to visit. Enjoyed engaging with tourists and locals alike and genuine warm and welcoming hospitality of Sicilians!!! My nephew and I spent a week in Palermo and 8 days in Catania and had an amazing trip. Lots to see in Palermo too and both cities are very different which makes a combined trip definitely worth it if you have 2 weeks to travel. This was my second trip to Italy, and first to Sicily. Love Italy and visit to Sicily was memorable. Highly recommend for great architecture, history, culture, food, beaches, and warm hospitality of Sicilian people!!!!

Catania is a beautiful, compact city that you can easily explore on foot in a day. It’s a relatively affordable destination with plenty of historical landmarks, and I felt safe throughout my stay. That said, I wouldn’t recommend visiting Catania on its own. Make sure to include a trip to Mount Etna—it was the highlight of my journey—as well as nearby cities like Syracuse and Taormina. That’s what makes a trip to eastern Sicily truly worthwhile.

Parking in Catania is very difficult so we decided not to rent a car immediately — the hotel is located only five minutes from Central Station and the Alibus stop to/from the airport (4 Euros) is very easy. From the hotel, it’s a 25 minute walk to the historic centre, or only one stop on the metro (1 Euro). So we returned to the airport to collect our car rental. Hotel itself has a lovely courtyard, breakfast was amazing, and staff were excellent.

It is a perfect located place for people who have an early morning flight. The property is less than 100 meters from Terminal C of Catania Airport. You can’t expect the conditions of a 4 or 5 star branded hotel, but I would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay somewhere quiet and clean near the airport. The bus station that takes you to the city center or the central station is 200 m away.
