FAQs about hotels in Catania

A Perfect Combination of Ancient and Modern

Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, at the foot of Mount Etna, Catania is the island’s second largest city. This charming destination features unique Sicilian Baroque architecture, large squares, avenues and a very important port.

On the northern side of the Cathedral Square, the historical Palazzo degli Elefanti houses the Town Hall of Catania. The Elephant Fountain is the city’s symbol and the entrance to the main shopping area. Surrounded by stunning Baroque buildings, Piazza del Duomo is a popular meeting point for tourists and locals.

Dedicated to Saint Agata and built over the Roman Baths of Achilles, the Duomo has an impressive facade that is one of Gia Battista Vaccarini’s masterpieces. The cathedral’s dome dates to 1802, while in the vaulted interior is the grave of the well-known composer Vincenzo Bellini.

Facing the Ionian Sea, this beautiful seaside place is one the hottest Italian cities during the summer. Mount Etna is an active volcano and a nice place for skiing in winter or a trip to the solidified rivers of lava during the rest of the year.

With the busiest airport in Sicily, Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, Catania is easily accessible by numerous European destinations like Munich, Rome and London. You can stay in one of the Catania hotels, guest houses or hostels Booking.com offers.

It's a poor relation to nearby tourist centres like Taormina, but there's enough to do for a couple of days of wondering the town and taking in the attractions, bars and cafes. Plenty of good restaurants and lively bars in the evening if that's your thing. Away the main tourist areas, the city gets very dirty very quickly - litter in the streets and graffiti everywhere, but it always felt safe. Driving looks like it would be a nightmare once you're off the main streets. I would recommend Catania to use as a base to explore Etna and the surrounding area rather than a destination in its own right.

The apartment is quiet and close to the main route to the Centre. About 15 minutes walk. Botanical gardens near and great cafe around the corner. Italian neighborhood which we liked. Via Etna, close by has all the shops and cafes you need on it. We prepared meals at home in the apartment and went to cafes late afternoon.

    Catania is a dirty city.

Catania is a dirty city. There was rubbish piled up at street corners which in the heat of the day became smelly. A lot of it was cleared during the night, but it soon built up again during the day. If you can stay to the north and west of the Duomo square, around Via Etnea it's better. If you can, take a tour of Etna and Taormina, which is a lovely town.

The apartment is in the very center of the city. Extremely clean, comfortable and functional accommodation. Towels are changed daily. The hotel organizes taxi transport from the airport. An extremely kind driver, I would say a friend of the hotel owner, explained to us what to see, visit, where the good restaurants are. Everything was great. Warm recommendation to everyone who wants to visit Catania.

It is located very close to the markets and restaurants with some of the freshest seafood possible. The location is also close to a bus terminal with connections to/from the airport and to other towns around Sicily. This is a great place to stay for exploring Catania and the surrounding area.
