FAQs about hotels in Catania

A Perfect Combination of Ancient and Modern

Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, at the foot of Mount Etna, Catania is the island’s second largest city. This charming destination features unique Sicilian Baroque architecture, large squares, avenues and a very important port.

On the northern side of the Cathedral Square, the historical Palazzo degli Elefanti houses the Town Hall of Catania. The Elephant Fountain is the city’s symbol and the entrance to the main shopping area. Surrounded by stunning Baroque buildings, Piazza del Duomo is a popular meeting point for tourists and locals.

Dedicated to Saint Agata and built over the Roman Baths of Achilles, the Duomo has an impressive facade that is one of Gia Battista Vaccarini’s masterpieces. The cathedral’s dome dates to 1802, while in the vaulted interior is the grave of the well-known composer Vincenzo Bellini.

Facing the Ionian Sea, this beautiful seaside place is one the hottest Italian cities during the summer. Mount Etna is an active volcano and a nice place for skiing in winter or a trip to the solidified rivers of lava during the rest of the year.

With the busiest airport in Sicily, Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, Catania is easily accessible by numerous European destinations like Munich, Rome and London. You can stay in one of the Catania hotels, guest houses or hostels Booking.com offers.

Catania is a beautiful city, with really impressive...

Catania is a beautiful city, with really impressive buildings, historical and cultural sites. The must sees in our opinion are the city center, Ursino Castle with the beautiful piazzetta in front of it, the Teatro Antico Greco-Romano, Palazzo Biscari, Via Etnea and the Botanical Garden. Also, a bonus is the south part of Spiaggia di Catania where you can watch the planes pass right above you when landing / departing. If you like to walk you can reach almost everything within 20-30 minutes. Catania is a good spot from where you can reach all the main cities and attractions on the east side of Sicily. Visiting Mount Etna is a must. The food was not exactly our taste but it is really cheap. The deserts on the other hand are a must try: granita (lemon, tangerine), gelato, cannoli. The sad part is that many buildings are very degraded, some of them with impressive architecture, you can see very much garbage everywhere and some areas are really shady even in daylight.

The parking was a big headache.

The parking was a big headache. Although we thought we had found all the right places to park but we still messed up and got parking tickets. Our fault entirely, we just misunderstood a couple of things so we learnt the hard way. If ever i have to have a car i will pay more for accommodation that includes free parking.

We loved Catania and would come here again!

We loved Catania and would come here again! The architecture is gorgeous with a view of Mt. Etna in the background. Very easy to walk and navigate. We were there in November and the weather was amazing! No crowds yet still enough people around. We stayed in a great spot overlooking the fish market. So close to all that we wanted to see in the center (centro storico). The airport is small. THERE IS AN AIRPORT BUS TO CATANIA FOR 4 EUROS. Well worth taking as a TAXI WILL COST YOU at least 30 euro.

Catania is a busy city with so much to see.

Catania is a busy city with so much to see. I have been traveling in and out of Catania for many years, but never really cared much for it until recently. I suggest that you get a tour or have a local explain the various parts of the city because there are areas that are not as nice, and if that is where you first go (which is what we did) that may leave an incorrect impression. Now each time I fly into Sicily I make sure to spend an extra day or two there exploring.

Catania is a great place with lots to do.

Catania is a great place with lots to do. It's dirty, noisy and full of graffiti but we both felt perfectly safe walking around at night and in crowded areas. It has a great WWII museum (bit of a walk from the town, but well worth it). There's a train station for getting to Taormina (and other places) - trains are very good & cheap but you need to get there well ahead of time as there can be long queues to buy tickets. It's great value in Catania - we found a place where a decent coffee was 70 cents. Most restaurants, even in the central areas, are very good value. Interesting flea market just off the Duomo on a Sunday.

A really excellent place to stay - it was our second stay, we started our holiday there, and ended it there as well. It is conveniently located near the airport, and easy to reach via highway. Also a good base to explore the eastern part of Sicily, Catania, Taormina, Siracusa, Mt Etna, or just to spend a day lingering at the pool. Personnel is super friendly and enthusiastic, taking the best care of you. We even could have an early breakfast on the day of departure.

The whole experience was amazing. We arrived very late at the airport and got picked up by Santi from the airport. He drove us through the city and gave a short history lesson about Catania. The room was very nice, extremely clean and had a lot of detail! We got many recommendations from him, where to eat and what to do which made our stay in Catania even better. I highly recommend Etna vibes home to anyone who visits Sicily.
