A Perfect Combination of Ancient and Modern

Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, at the foot of Mount Etna, Catania is the island’s second largest city. This charming destination features unique Sicilian Baroque architecture, large squares, avenues and a very important port.

On the northern side of the Cathedral Square, the historical Palazzo degli Elefanti houses the Town Hall of Catania. Facing the Ionian Sea, this beautiful seaside place is one the hottest Italian cities during the summer. Mount Etna is an active volcano and a nice place for skiing in winter or a trip to the solidified rivers of lava during the rest of the year.

We stayed at Catania and used it as a base to visit the...

We stayed at Catania and used it as a base to visit the nearby towns/places of Syracuse/Oritago, Mt Etna, etc. We had a car and parking was easy to find in the street or in a nearby street. It was close to the beach, but about a 30/45minute walk into the city centre and old town. Claudia was easy to deal with and so helpful providing advice, recommendations to local grocery stores, sites to see, etc. Would highly recommend.

What we liked most was the atmosphere and the authentic feel...

What we liked most was the atmosphere and the authentic feel. There is a large beach—we only visited the sandy one—though it was a bit dirty in places, with some trash scattered about. We also really enjoyed the town center; it’s cozy and full of cafés. It’s one of the best towns to stay in if you want to visit Mount Etna—we went there, and it’s an experience we’ll remember for the rest of our lives. We also took a trip to the city of Syracuse, which we highly recommend; it’s the birthplace of Archimedes.

Didn't like it.

Didn't like it. Stayed here after a group tour as I hadn't been here before. Very dirty and graffitied. Okay if you like shopping and Baroque architecture but not for me. Did find a couple of good contemporary art galleries.

They closed the airport & the airline didn’t find us any...

They closed the airport & the airline didn’t find us any flights to leave! They wanted us to stay 4-6 more days to hope the airport would be open by then! We had to take a train to Rome to book our own flight to leave Italy!

Catania features lot of interesting sights and beautiful...

Catania features lot of interesting sights and beautiful buildings, but what I appreciated most was the warm welcome and friendliness of the people I met. Walking around the historic center is a lot of fun. I enjoyed visiting the markets as well.
