This is a traditional Japanese ryokan with public baths (gender separated). Dinner and breakfast are amazing and plentiful, with locally sourced organic produce (even coffee!). Our room (Japanese room with private toilet) was to the left of the entrance. It was very spacious. The heater worked very well as autumn night was a bit damp and cold. The beds are futons on wood bed frames on tatami, and they are super comfortable. As I have a whole-leg tattoo which is usually not permitted in the public baths, I notified Ranko in advance, and she reserved the private bath for us. The private bath was a very beautiful blue ceramic bath filled with warm (I don’t think it’s very hot) healing hot spring water from the area. Ranko’s warm personality really made the stay memorable. Be sure to ask her for recommendations of the areas. She is a well of knowledge of the area!

We spent three wonderful days in Hirosaki, a charming and authentic town that still feels untouched by mass tourism. It was refreshing to explore a place where the pace is slower and the culture feels so genuine. The absolute highlight of our stay was Guest House Chara, run by the kindest elderly couple, Fusao and Toshiko. Their warmth and hospitality made us feel completely at home—it wasn’t just a place to sleep, it truly felt like staying with family. Their house told a story, filled with warmth, history, and the little personal touches that made it feel lived-in and loved. From the amazing homemade breakfast to the delicious ramen dinners they prepared, every meal was made with care and love. The guest house is conveniently located, just a short walk from a supermarket and a laundromat, which made things really easy for us. This personal, welcoming experience truly made our trip special. A charming and cozy cottage equipped with everything a family needs for a comfortable stay. The heating stove was a delightful feature, especially as it was my first time using one. Despite encountering record snowfall during our visit, our gracious host went above and beyond by using his bulldozer to clear the snow, ensuring we had no trouble venturing out during the day. He even made a snow slide for our kids to play! Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience authentic life in northern Japan.

Hotel is located very close to the station, easily accessible by underground passage with elevators and stairs. Front desk personnel are friendly, courteous and helpful with directions. Breakfast was delicious - delivered to the room in a bento box at the time I specified to the front desk at check in. Breakfast contained Japanese style food-salmon, rice and vegetables. Rooms are clean with comfortable beds and it is very quiet.
