Elevated 5782 feet above sea level within the mountains of Ambewela, Jetwing Warwick Gardens. Surrounded by charming farm lands, its rooms come with balconies and butler services. Everything. I think it was the most magical experience to spend Christmas in the property. The staff were outstanding! I will never forget how well we were treated by Viji, Meenamma, Pradeeban and Faris- we miss you all very much! We had the whole place to ourselves on Christmas eve and felt like the lord and the lady of the mansion haha. Christmas eve dinner was excellent and we had the most beautiful french red. The hike from the estate was just wonderful too- followed by the delicious lunch at Meenamamma's rooms. Best stay ever! Highly recommend. I will one day come back for sure.
Ohiya is a place definitely worth to go. Horton Plains are absolutely gorgeous, but even the unusual forests around Ohiya, birds, other animals and all the plants (especially flowers and coniferous species) are worth to see. We loved the mysterious weather, hot mornings, misty afternoons or evenings, and beautiful nights with distant thunderstorms. This place is fabulous and we wish to come back again. Best restaurant for us was staying at Muthu Nisindi in Forest Cyniciam Holiday Bungalow. And her husband Mahinda took care of us with his tuk-tuk, being always on time, always prepared to stop to show us an an animal or answer question or wish. We definitely recommend animal watching around the village, walks in forest, eating all the food you can and going to Horton Plains at least for two days to hike through all the paths available, we managed to do just 2 hikes and will come back once to see the rest.
Ohiya is the nearest town to Horton Planes and Worlds End, UNESCO World Heritage site. Horton Planes is home to 20/27 endangered bird species. Hike is approximately 9km loop. One can visit many other natural wonders from Ohiya including Bambara Kanda, Iddamalgasdeniya Railway Station. There are 14 railway tunnels between Ohiya and Iddamalhasdeniya railway stations. Other attractions include several watrefalls.
Ohiya is a perfect base for getting to the Horton Plains, being only 4km away. But there is also a wonderful changing landscape of tea plantations, conifer forests, waterfalls and mountainside villages to explore. There are few places to eat out in Ohiya, the village is a clutch of houses surrounding the train station, but you will be given an ample breakfast and dinner at Hill Safari. Take a walk to Bandarakande Waterfall, visit the mountain top town of Haputale or just sit with a cup of tea on the balcony and drink in the view.
I actually alterd my plans when i arrived, i decided to stay one more night! Ohiya is a good starting point for your trip to the Horton Plains National Park! If it is not pouring down, you must go and see “World’s End” it is a beautiful hike and a stunning view! Well worth the rather expensive entry fee. Arriving by train is a good way to travel to Ohiya, its only a small village and there is not much to do but enjoy the view, relex after your hike to World’s End and sleep tight before you travel on! A lot people arrive late, go to Horton Plains and straight to the station to leave, but i liked taking the time.
Good for a short stay (overnight) as its close to Horton Plains (Worlds End entrance gate). We were moved to alt accommodation on arrival as the owners have two properties on offer. The accommodations was basic, bedding needs a review - pillows in particular. Bathroom was clean and functional. Our hosts were great, our site rep was very attentive and happy to help out with our requests. The food was great home cooking and our hosts prpepared a fantastic takeaway breakfast for us to eat as we reached Worlds End lookout.
This is the ideal spot to start the exploration to Horton's Plain and Worlds-End! Just get there by the incredible scenic ride of the Sri-Lanka Train route Kandy (or Colombo) <<-->> Badulla
