This is a very interesting place to stay - it’s in the grounds of a historic monastery, with a nice restaurant surrounded by lovely mountainy scenery. The staff are very friendly and the hotel is exceptionally clean. Nice breakfast, too. A great place to relax.

The host was very communicative, kind and helpful. Easy checkin with lockbox. Once we entered, I was so pleased! They thought of everything a guest might need-really, every amenity I needed and more was in the room. It's such a comfortable space, and the balcony is wonderful! I loved the gardens on the grounds as well. Easily walkable to town and fun to walk through the village. I highly recommend staying there if you find yourself in Kratovo. I felt very cared for when staying there.

Etno House Shancheva is much more than just a "place to stay," It is like a perfect gateway into local community and surrounding area. Run by a two-generation family, it offers guests absolutely all what a first-time visitor to Macedonia may need: comfortable tastefully decorated rooms in 300 years old house, lovely views of Kratovo and surrounding mountains, and - above all - genuine hospitality of its owners. Take your time and talk with Iakim (younger generation), an archeologist by training and a worker in the local museum. He will be glad to fill you up with all info on local customs, culture, and history. Don't miss an opportunity to try and buy home-made spices and condiments prepared by his father. Staying at Shancheva will make your time in Kratovo a five-star experience.

I think the village doesn't meet the expectations I had after reading some travellers blogs. The village is not well kept and quite filthy. The famous towers and bridges are not so stunning as expected and the is no information about them anywhere. People were not very friendly either. Our only good experience was eating.

Kratovo is a great town set in the mountains.

Kratovo is a great town set in the mountains. The museum is very interesting, so is the clock tower, there are also plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants to try. I highly recommend tours offered by Jakim, who can be contacted at the Ethno House, he and his father know everything about the town and region. There are also nice things to do in the area around so it is worth to stay in Kratovo for 5 or so days to explore and see everything the town and area can offer you.

I had no idea, and simply ended up here.

I had no idea, and simply ended up here. Kratovo itself is unremarkable, but rather beautifully sited around a ravine; it is a quintessential rural Macedonian town, complete with market, cobbled streets, some Soviet blocks and decent food. It is also close to the remarkable "stone DOlls" at Kuclicki, a most extraordinary natural, post-volcanic phenomenon. The region is interesting, many churches, small villages, and a strong feel for this rather interesting country. I am glad that I extended my stay here.

A city with a fascinating history from all time periods.

A city with a fascinating history from all time periods. Here you can find geological curiosities from 20 million years ago, prehistorical sites, 11th century churches... Also the city used to be such a blend of different cultures, of which you can still see traces today. Truly fascinating. I recommend Etno House Shancheva for a stay in a traditional house. They can also offer tours which help you understand how the city used to function.
