Schiermonnikoog is a small, windy island. In warm summer weather it would be lovely for swimming and exploring. In winter (when I was there), it is probably best for bird watchers (lots there). I did do some nice walks, but after 2 days I felt I had exhausted most of the possibilities on the island for walking. Restaurants and cafes were good and there were a lot of them - most were very empty on a weekday in February.
Our short visit exceeded our expectations. It's a gorgeous island, stunning scenery, peaceful and friendly. Will definitely come back soon and bring the whole family. Perfect if you want to escape the hustle and bustle. No cars allowed (only the locals have cars on the island). Great to decompress, relax and spend time in nature. Definitely rent a bike (right when you come off the ferry there's a bike rental), best way to get around.
The size of the island was like walking around the Open Air Museum in Arnhem, because of the absence of cars. It is so pittoresk and beautiful, with magnificent beaches and beautiful nature. Really worthwhile when you like to walk or cycle.
There are bike trails all over the island and on relatively flat terrain. You can easily see the whole island in a day long ride with stops for lunch and drinks and even a dip into the sea. There is a good guide for biking and walking in the info center in town. By the end of my 2nd day I was wishing I was staying one more night as it took a bit to get into the slow pace of the island. Highly recommend the Balgexpress all the way to the east end of the island to see the seals at low tide, and biking and walking everywhere. It is a really charming and slow place to pass time in a beautiful and nature-filled setting. The ferries and buses are all timed with each other so it is hard to miss your connection there or back. Rent a bike or bring your own along as there are no cars for visitors on the island. Favorite spot for a bite was by far the Schimonnikoger Vishandel - eat in or take out from the counter. The lifeguard beaches all had wind breaks and chair rentals and the beaches are vast. There were a lot of couples and families traveling and as a foreign solo visitor it was a little challenging getting service and a little lonely, but I wasn't going for night life or to meet people, so wasn't an issue for me.
We loved to be at Schiermonnikoog. It is quiet, with beautiful beaches and nature. We rode bicycle and walked along the seaside. And we had wonderfull meals, the best in the restaurant of Hotel Graaf Bernstorff.
The island is great for a nice weekend getaway in the winter. It is very quit and great for walking in the village, or on the beach. Riding bikes is a must to enjoy the beautiful nature of this island. There are lots of species of birds to discover as well as some nice restaurants and unique little shops with local art. Try local specialties from the baker or seafood at the fish fry.
Amazing location, just a few minutes by cab or bus. Staff is the most amazing out there, we were there for a wedding and they really catered to the bride's and groom's every need! I had the room with the sauna and spa bath, it was rather warm due to the blazing hot weather, but thankfully there was a fan present in the closet. Breakfast was amazing as well. All in all I'd choose this hotel if I'd visit the island again!
The restaurant and outside of the hotel are beautifull. The hotel is located in the centre of town so you don't have to go far to reach the shops and there is a busstop outside the hotel so the connection to the ferry and the beach are perfect. Breakfast in the restaurant was lovely.
Nice breakfast. Great location (next to the most beautifull beach of Schiermonnikoog). Comfortable bed. Wonderful food. Given the restrictive corona measures, we felt like the personnel made the very best of it. We had a great stay!
Everything is done to make you feel welcome. A taxi waiting at arrival of the Ferry to bring you to the hotel; complimentary bikes that can be used during the whole stay; a place in the heart of the small village.
The hotel is very stylish. Breakfast offers a good variety of different food, probably everyone will be satisfied! :) The location is great. It is in the center, but a few meters away, therefore also quiet.
