I loved the free walking tour with Carlos. Great info and he was hilarious. I'm a veggie and always hunt out specifically veggie restaurants - Arequipa had a good range and my favourite was the new veggie vegan sushi place on bolivar - El Buda Profundo - beautiful food, great ambience and owners. The only thing I didn't like was the man who picked up my bag at the bus station when leaving for cusco. He tried to steal it and walk out the station with it - my back was tuned for a second! I grabbed it back with no confrontation - just be careful.
This is a very beautiful city to just wander around, the main square is gorgeous and lunch at the restaurants on the terrace overlooking it are a must. I spent a morning wandering around Santa Catalina monastery, such a pretty and peaceful place. Go early to avoid the crowds and get it mostly to yourself. There is a good little coffee shop in there that sell delicious cake!
Arequipa is indeed a lovel city full of charming colonial buildings all hewn from the local white stone, 'sillar.' It is a great place to wander about and be sure and explore the countryside as well. Colcha Canyon is the big draw of course but the lesser-known gems like the Cataratas de Pillones are magical. The city is marred only by the touts around the main square (avoid the restaurants there) and most especially by the hordes of fellow gringos and euro wienies that swarm about. The scourge of 🇵🇪😢!
We came to Arequipa as a stopover for the Colca Canyon, but we were plesantly suprised by the Historical centre, which is absolutely fantastic. Lots to see (including a history museum where they keep Juanita, a well preserved Inca girl mummy), a large, typical local Peruvian market with food, fruits and lots of alpaca/lama stuff, some upscale shops with superb (but expensive) baby alpaca clothing and accessories, ATMs and restaurants everywhere. Not to mention the Plaza del Armas, with its imposing, shining cathedral. From the streets you can see the snowy volcanoes peaks on a nice day. Make sure to try the street-available clove&cinnamon icecream, delicious stuff. Outside this area, the city is mostly favela-like, with unfinished houses, poorly maintained streets and heavy traffic - we only went through it on our way to the airport.
Arequipa is a very special city. The people are so friendly.Even when traders try to sell you something and you decline, they wish you a nice day and a pleasant trip. Some travelers may have a problem with Arequipa's altitude, but you normally climatise after a short period
Such a lovely town! Arequipa felt like a breath of fresh air coming from places like La Paz, Puno, and Cusco (which all has their own charm of course). It is a mix of architecture, history (pre and post Incan), crafts, quaintness, majesty - with the three volcanoes surrounding the town in the distance with an amazing culinary scene I would have loved to spend a week enjoying. The food ranges from next level fusion to the wholly authentic. Great place to spend walking around all day admiring the old buildings, and duck into a museum or cathedral or church or monastery. I would definitely visit again when I have more time to take advantage of one of the day hikes or to the colca mountains excursion during the dryer season.
We arrived here on the day that the president announced an emergency lock down because of the corona virus. The same eveningbthe hotel was shut down. Police came to control the place. The staff and owner where very helpfull. We could stay here as long as we like and as long as was needed. There was a total travelban for all people. The owner told us, as we were the only guests, as only guests that were allready in the hotel like us were allowed to stay, we could use the Villa as our own house. We could use the kitchen, washingmachine etc. Verry verry helpfull and nice staf! They took good care of us. Beside this situation, the hotel has beautiful and comfortable rooms. The double beds are so big, you could fit 3 persons in. It has a nice small garden where you can enjoy breakfast in the sun (or inside) and there is a large park just in front of the hotel. The area is really safe and they have a secured parking area (no hight limits). They also allow dogs. There is also a common area with fireplace and good healthy breakfast. Hot water 24/7 and strong Wifi!
The hotel has a great location, is super clean and comfortable and very well run.
