Enjoyable to wander the cobblestone streets and narrow lanes of Beja. It is small enough to soon feel comfortable navigating. Lots of public art and religious structures. Many large tree filled squares. We visited in sunny November when some of the places I wanted to visit like the sculpture museum and some restaurants were closed for the season. We like to travel in non tourist times, so this is the trade off. There was still plenty to see and enjoy. We especially enjoyed 2 restaurants which we ate at more than once: Tem Avondo (authentic Portuguese, large portions, good value) and Sabores do Campo (interesting and tasty vegetarian buffet, where you pay by weight of your selections from large array).
Beja is not very touristic but is an interesting place to visit and a great base for visiting Evora, Mertola and Alvito and generally exploring the Alentejo region. Recommend Adega do Castelo, A Pipa and Tasca da Su restaurants which all served great food. You can easily get around Beja on foot with some help from Google maps.
A good stop over location if you are traveling between Lisbon and the Algarve. Accommodation and food options are all reasonable and there are a couple of museums, the Beja Castle, the park and municipal pool if you’re traveling with children.
I liked the fact that the hotel was in the middle of the town, no parking at the hotel but we knew that before we went and parking was free all weekend in the car parks which were a couple of minutes walk. Found people very friendly on the whole and they appreciated us trying to speak Portuguese, ( hello and thank you was about all we could manage) Ate at the Dona Maria excellent value for money.
Very quaint city with a lot to see for its size. Really cute and unique coffee shops, a big, beautiful castle, and a museum. I’m sure there’s more but I was only there for one night. I think 3 days in the spring or fall would be perfect.
A little town in the Alentejo. Few travelers bother to go there, but since in 40 years I had seen most of Portugal I decided to try it. Evora has more historic monuments, but Beja is a good second. But not always easy with only public transport.

The hotel was sooooooo spotlessly clean and spic and span. The hosts son spoke very good English and was very welcoming and friendly. Great location within walking distance to restaurants and Beja castle. Great recommendation of the "25 April" restaurant.
