Offering an outdoor swimming pool, a restaurant and a fitness center, Quinta Alegre is located in Madeira’s Estreito da Calheta. The unit features lush green surroundings and has panoramic sea views.

This place is a garden of Eden, it is Paradise. From the moment we arrived, we lowered our shoulders, took a deep breath - and relaxed. For once it actually is like the pictures! This is a small hotel, with only ca. 20 rooms, and not 200! Quite and mostly hikers! Everything is very clean: the room, the towel, the linen, the restaurant, the terrasse and the pool, which is cleaned and checked every morning at sunrise. The bed was very comfortable, the madras very good for my back. The room was spacious and nice furnished, with a beautiful view and with mosquito netting, so we had the window always open. The food is delicious: the breakfast with daily variation of different bread (full-grain! ), fruits, eggs, dishes..... and homemade marmalade! We enjoyed the 3 course dinner menue, where we could choose between fish, meat or vegetarian everyday, and we were never disappointed, it was delicious. And the most of the food is from their own organic garden, which we were generously guided through by the owner. The whole sustainability concept is amazing, in every detail! The solar power, the sewer systems of recycling for the garden, even the lunchpackage is reusable bottles and cans! For hiking it is the best option on Madeira. The staff is very friendly, helpful and doing everything they can for you. The location is perfect. The best is the atmosphere and the garden, we woke up to birds singing, breakfast under banana tree in the sunrise, the tranquility of the garden, swimming in the pool and dinner in the sunset in the garden. We will be back next year!

Was in a beautiful area with amazing views. The hotel was clean. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Was initially disappointed there was no AC in the room but realized you didn’t need it - just kept the balcony door open and the breeze was adequate. Food was good, desserts were great.

Calheta is a nice village and had a big supermarket as well as smaller shops and a white sand beach. If you enjoy hiking, you will have to travel a bit because most of the hikes are not located in this part of the island. I would personally stay somewhere a bit more centered next time. Although this town also had a certain charm because part of the village is still rather old, it also has a main road next to the beach with some restaurants, a bigger supermarket, pharmacy, ... I enjoy staying in a neighborhood which is a little more vibrant and went on a lot of hikes, so that's why I would choose a different town to stay the next time I visit Madeira.

A small town with amazing views over the Atlantic and a public sandy beach. There is a museum of contemporary art and a sugar refinery, but we did not visit them. A very short walk on the waterfront. Worth visiting the Jardim do Mar, a small village with pedestrian narrow streets. We also enjoyed the dolphin watching trip. It takes about 40 minutes by car from Calheta to Funchal.

Probably the nicest place of Madeira, especially for those who love sunbathing, sandy beaches and relaxation. Also if You would like to travel to North of Madeira, it is much closer to do it from Calheta region comparing to Funchal.

Lovely small town close to the see, all accomodation are close but take care ... if you don't like to climb a slope, it will be hard because all the streets are uphill !!! The sun is always present but not too hot at this moment so it was wonderfull. We'll come back as soon as possible !

The area is quite widespread from the marina and sand beach up into the mountains. Marina and beach area lovely and not inundated by 'cruisers'. Some good local cafes and bars inland. Very steep in places. Be careful if walking if recently wet! Good connections by bus to Funchal, Porto Moniz (well worth a visit with its rock pool swimming), and other smaller seaside villages. A good base for a walking holiday especially if you have a car though some levada walks can be got to by bus. Has an interesting looking modern art museum sadly closed for maintenance on my visit.

Calheta is not only a town but also the name of a large part of the island, which in this place is sunny and has beautiful views and sunsets. I highly recommend renting a car which is the best way for exploring the various villages and charming viewpoints of Caletha.
