Gleaming With Global Importance
Between desert and the Persian Gulf, Al Khobar is one of 3 neighbouring cities at the heart of the global oil industry. Dammam is the largest and has a huge port, while Dhahran houses a huge mall and the headquarters of Saudi Aramco - the world’s largest oil company. The Ghawar Field – the world’s largest oil field – is south-west and there are smaller fields nearer the cities.
Given their international importance, these cities have a large expat community and a host of world-renowned brands of shops, hotels and restaurants. Many are along the waterfront Corniche, one of Saudi Arabia’s most visited spots outside Mecca and Medina.
Lining the western edge of Al Khobar (or Al Khubar), this promenade passes palm-lined parks, a white mosque jutting into the sea, and a futuristic-looking water tower on a small island. The Corniche also backs sandy beaches with warm waters, though the best beaches are in Half Moon Bay.
This affluent city has no shortage of shops and popular Al Rashid Mall includes a children’s amusement area. The Giant Stores are also worth a look, even if just to see the gigantic shopping trolley out front.
