Nice city. Plenty of bargain shopping markets and areas. Great outdoor food. Lovely waterfalls near the city. Nice sights around the city. The road from Mae Sot to Tak through the mountains is quite hilly but a beautiful drive.
I loved the exposure to so many different groups within the Thai culture with each group influencing their own area from the temples, mosques and restaurants. Negotiating the streets is rather tricky in some parts with the absence of sidewalks. The amount of stray dogs was disheartening. I spent most of my time at the school I was visiting and found the staff and students the most delightful and amiable of people. The sightseeing trips around Mae Sot were amazing and this is a gem of a place to visit. The veil of the tourist is torn away and the authentic Thailand is revealed.
This is really not a tourist spot. Apparently the only reason an international airport being set up there is for its proximity to the casinos just over the Burmese border. Not much to do or see for other types of tourists, very much a suburban centre that has all you need but little more. The acoustic bar out front of the Hop Inn has decent western food and there is a cool Canadian outlet in the centre of town too. 100 baht gets you anywhere in a taxi
We travel by motorbike. We stay only for a few hours. Just for relaxing ourselves after 900km travel. We having our breakfast at Mustafa restaurant. Then continue our journey to the chalenging road called thousand corner.
I was there staying to see friends an hour or two away from Mae Sot. I used Mae Sot as a base. Not enough time to look around , however seemed a nice place and hope to stay longer to look around next time. Intend to see friends again in a year or two and will include extra time to look around at Mae Sot.
You ask how was the length of trip? Mae Sot is mainly used as a "visa run" destination. It is the cross over town into Myanmar. I did have, almost, 2 complete days in Mae Sot. Could have used one more. I had 1.5 days in Myawaddy. Should have stayed another day. Very interesting town, Myawaddy. Mae Sot is a quieter family town. Night life,,,i.e. bars and clubs? Don't know. Ate at a good restaurant in Mae Sot. guy had a Canadian flag on the sidewalk. Name? Mae Sot is smaller. I rode the bicycle around for 2 hours and completed the city. It was a nice reprieve from the burgeoning city of Chaing Mai.
Mae Sot
We loved our stay here. The service was very friendly and the building was quirky yet very comfortable. The parking at the back wasn't immediately obvious but the owner kindly showed us where to go. Breakfast choices were all excellent - we thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes we had between us and actually shared some our food so we all got to try some. The hotel is very convenient for local restaurants and all the main places in Mae Sot
The staff here are so helpful. They go above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable EVERY year when we come.
