I was quite alarmed throughout the whole of VIETNAM on the way the electricity supply system was implemented. I know this is not uncommon in Asia generally, but as a western tourist it is very noticeable. In fact I know of a 14 year old boy who touched a power pole in Indonesia some years back and was electrocuted and died instantly. I realise that this is still a developing nation and tourism is a very important industry for the country. However, the efficiency of the electricity supply system was demonstrated during my stay at the APRICOT HOTEL, a beautiful elegeant hotel perfect in every way. However, 4 out of the 5 days I spent there the cables for TV/Internet and even the telephones at one point, were down and I was unable to watch CNN or BBC to catch up with the news. The Hotel Manager explained to me the difficulties with the contractor and how this had not happened before since their opening (about a year I think). With regard to HANOI itself (and other tourist places in Vietnam), I am wondering if it would not be possible to schedule tours either very early morning or late afternoon. I took a morning half-day tour which was meant to be 4 hours. However, after visiting the square of he Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, driving past the Parliament and Presidential Palace, and visiting an ancient temple it was just TOO HOT to continue, so I did not undertake the CYCLO RIDE which would have completed it and no doubt been interesting, if I could have withstood the humidity. I took off for the relative coolness of SAPA in the hills where many other Western tourists were. Many of them had done bookings for the various hillside retreats in VIETNAM, LAOS, CAMBODIA because of the intense humidity. I realise this is a whole new way of thinking about things and the working hours of local people, but there could be a good response if these choices could be implemented, even at slightly increased cost
Love Hanoi. It's a great place with so much culture. Love all the cafes in the street, it reminded us of Paris in a way. La Selva Hotel was the perfect place to stay in the old quarter! Just be careful when you cross the street!
Allow the airport to provide the taxi to and from. This prevents people from ripping you off. My favorite places to eat were those recommended by my hotel and also in the main shopping districts. Getting around Hanoi is so inexpensive as long as you know how much jt should cost and negotiate a price before you leave with the bike/taxi
People are overall very friendly and food is great! We ate a lot of street food. Remember ask for price of food before ordering to make sure that you are paying the price you expected. Also, always bargain when you buy something as they often overcharge tourists/foreigners.
Finished our GAdventures tour in Hanoi. Loved the cycling tour through Hanoi, ate at street restaurant guided by our team leader. Found the pushy stall owners a little too much at times. Don't use funny money laundry on hang bac next to the hostel - missing western style items such as bikini top, sports shirts and board shorts. Not helpful when we went back to ask where our items were. Cheaper laundry with more accountability on Ma May next to la siesta hotel.
We had a great time at the Bia Hoi street side beer joints. On weekends we saw a live band in one of the streets Which was a lot of fun. Try to find some bun cha to eat from a street vendor. Out of 5 weeks in Vietnam it is still one of our favorite dishes. Egg coffee is really unique and delicious! Like a custard with coffee. We also had really tasty yogurt with coffee at Cafe Duy Tri which is the oldest coffee shop in Hanoi - open since 1936! The Fine Art Museum is excellent and the water puppets show fun.
We have fully enjoyed any second of our stay at La Siesta Diamond hotel, even if we didn’t have time to use the spa. This is a very good hotel, in an central location, very clean, comfortable and nice rooms. The restaurant is great - breakfast is wonderful, lunch/dinner are excellent and they have a very good wine selection. The Sky Bar terrace is extremely pleasant and they have live music almost every night! We’ve spent New Year’s Eve on the terrace and made the booking in advance by email - thanks to Andy, the manager of the bar, very prompt and responsive. Entire hotel staff is wonderful, smiling and they will do anything to please the client and make your stay memorable! We have to thank to all personnel for our stay! There are few names which comes to my mind (like Van Anh, Hung (Oscar), Khang, Jannine) as we’ve interacted most often and took good care of us and our requests! Congratulations to Mr. Giing - I think he’s managing very well this hotel! We’ve stayed 3 nights, left our luggages there and went for a Halong Bay cruise and come back for one more night. On our return, we’ve found a ‘welcome back home’ message in our rooms - it’s true, we felt home!
Everything is nice and clean, toothbrush is good quality, friendly and helpful staff. Free breakfast is good and cooked by a madam who is the owner of hotel, but you may need to ask for it at reception before a day so they can prepare and it is only served before 8 am. You can come to restaurant on rooftop at 8th floor every time, they have a perfect view at night from there but customers usually dont know because there is no button in elevator to come to 8th floor, you may have to walk from 6th floor, we brought whiskey and drank at there all the evening watching traffic stuff down there. This maybe is the most valuable thing if you stay in this place.
The staff were absolutely amazing. They went above and beyond at every opportunity to make our stay as easy and enjoyable as possible. We caught an overnight train to SAPA and they personally escorted us to our train cabin with our luggage. They also have assisted us resolving issues with our flights that we booked through another company. I would recommend anyone who is staying in Hanoi to stay here. I will definitely be coming back.
The hotel was luxurious at an affordable price for students traveling on a budget. It was a nice getaway from the trains and hostels we had been living at for four weeks. We spent a lot of time at the roof top pool area which was an amazing break from the hot and humid city with the cool water and sun chairs in the shade.
Best place in Hanoi Old town. New, clean, super nice and helpful staff. Awesome breakfast! We really can recommend staying with Simon and all his friendly staff! They also can arrange tickets, tours and trips for you. Location is perfect, Old Town but in a small and quiet road.
Really great location in a wonderful city. Area around the lake is pedestrianised at weekends and it was great to see all the family-friendly activity there.
perfect ! nice a great staff in a Hotel ! very helpful staff and good Manager :) perfect location , the room looked royal - i felt like a princess :)
