This was an excellent stop over while doing route 62 before continuing through Meiringspoort and the Swartberg pass which is what Barry, our host advised us to do. Amazing variety of fauna on the farm and fascinating farming methods. Interesting little town with some worthwhile "look-ins". Definitely a good choice!
We stayed at the stone cottage a way from the main house and chalets ....needed a high clearance to get there. Beautifully restored and set against the mountains, it was special. The cooking and bathing facilities were all outside which we loved and "easy access to mountain walks was great. Everything we wanted was available and we loved chatting to our very interesting host Barry. We definitely would like to come back again.
Lovely little town!! Nice restaurant and coffee shop in town. The surrounding areas are beautiful and De Rust is well situated to drive to all of these. We drove through Meirings Poort and visited the waterfall which was really nice to see. There are lovely place to go for a drive or walk. The surrounding towns are also very nice. We loved the "padstal" right outside De Rust when you enter from the Oudtshoorn side!!
i loved the decor in the unit and the fact that each bedroom had its own air conditioner. The facility was very clean and appealing. a hairdryer would be a good "nice to have". the caretaker of the unit was there during the day and very approachable and helpful. The pool was really tiny for such a hot place and if there were more visitors on the premises, it would have been a problem.
De Rust is a small town surrounded by beautiful mountains. If you enjoy hiking or mountain biking there are lots of beautiful trails. The Meiringspoort challenge is a well organised event and we will be back again.
It depends on your expectations really... I had none given it had never been visited before. Generally, everybody was extremely helpful and friendly. I would go back and recommend others to visit too, but you have to be made aware of the quirks and the exentrisities of the venue....... thats some places only open on Friday nights, others shut on Saturday and theres not so much to do past dusk generally. Having said that I did enjoy the Pearce and tranquility.
