I was in Lerwick during a stretch of unpleasant weather - cold and rainy with strong winds sometimes gusting at gale force. I would not recommend October or probably not winter. I will return, but next time in May or June! The city and surrounding towns are worth the visit. Next time I make the journey I will go to Kirkwall, too,

This is where you need to base if you want to explore the Shetland Islands. We found a great tour guide who took us all the way to the northern end of Unst and with his 40+ year history on the island was a wealth of information. Message me if you want his contact info.
We also did one of the wildlife boat tours which was great!

We very much enjoyed seabird watching tour departing from the small boat ferry port in Lerwick, which is really recommended! We brought a car rented at Aberdeen to Orkney/Shetland by ferries and it was nicely worked. Taking your own car is recommend as the great bird watching and archaeological sites are far away from Lerwick. Unfortunately the puffin season was over when we were in the Orkney/Shetland. I would like to visit again to see puffins!

Lerwick, well known to many people because of the TV series 'Shetland', is a charming town with many interesting features. Most importantly, the people are very friendly and welcoming to visitors, a good thing as during the summer months it is a regular stop off for cruise ships.
The town centre is tucked just behind the sea front and contains interesting local shops, cafes and restaurants. Our favourite was 'The Dowry', which has great food and excellent coffee. Visit Fort Charlotte, take a walk around the Nab for breathtaking views, catch a ferry across the sound to the island of Bressay, peruse the outstanding (and free) Shetland Museum or walk out of town to explore the ancient Broch of Clickimin. Of course, there is also a tour of the locations used to film 'Shetland'.

Lerwick is a great base for shorter excursions around the islands. We could have stayed longer for more hiking and half/full day visits. Shetland has a lot to offer. The nature is outstanding and people are very friendly.
We really enjoyed our tour with Lara Thomason who guided us around south Shetland and took us the the north west cliffs of Shetland. Very knowledgeable and pleasant to hang with. Next time it will be for hiking!

A lovely place with plenty to do.
A lovely place with plenty to do. Those of you who want to relax can enjoy the amazing scenery and wildlife from many locations around Lerwick and even when having a coffee or eating dinner at some of the locations.
Perfect place to stay if you are planning on spending a few days or more exploring the islands. The apartment is very nicely furnished with everything you would need, hosts are lovely and had left us some basics (bread, milk, cake and wine!) to get us started on arrival. Rooms were spotless and some lovely views. A very easy drive to Tesco just down the hill, and only a couple of minutes to drive to the centre of Lerwick. Overall we loved staying here and highly recommend it, there was plenty of room for our family of 5.
The property was beside the Maryfield ferry terminal. James welcomed us at the door- no booking in formality and we were shown to our room. The room was clean beautifully refurbished and the bed was so comfortable. Fabulous view across to Lerwick. The ferry was visible but we could not hear it. Although on the island of Barassay, the journey takes less than 10 minutes from Lerwick.
Breakfast was lovely and Nellie was so friendly as were all the staff. A wee gem of a hotel.
Isleburgh was the perfect accommodation for my solo trip to Shetland. Lerwick is a great base to see the archipelago and this place was conveniently located, affordably priced, clean, cozy, and welcoming. It was nice to have my own private and secure space to come back to after long days of exploring. Check in and out were really easy and it was great having a carpark for my rental care. My room also had a sink and fridge which was very convenient.
Breakfast was served in the sea-side restaurant. Coffee/Tea was served freshly brewed and free for extra. Hot breakfast (Full Scottish Breakfast) was served on your preferred order and good value. I especially would like to mention is a quality of Croissants and cold food (ham, boiled eggs, tomatoes) served at the buffet counter, which was really good and we very much enjoyed! Breakfast of the Lerwick Hotel is recommendable!
This hostel was excellent, great value for money, very clean, all required facilities. Above all the manager was so friendly and helpful - what a difference that makes to a stay. Would highly recommend to families looking for reasonably priced, spacious and clean accomodation in Lerwick. We have a three year old and she loved it, excellent park and swimming pool nearby.
The hotel was neither far from the center of the town (about ten minutes walking distance) nor from the countryside (in less than five minute's drive could be out and away of town). Breakfast was abundant and more like a Scottish breakfast than a continental one. Could keep going till dinner time without a real need for a lunch break.
Stunning views, fantastic location, spotlessly clean room. Exceptionally comfortable bed with top quality linen. Great bath sheets and loads of hot water for the bath.
Hotel is obviously in the process of being refurbished and it's going to be a jewel in Lerwick's crown when the refurbishment is completed.
Great value for money!
The room is immaculately clean. Love the small personalised touches e.g. chocolate mints, tea, coffee and chocolate milk tray (kettle). We were able to use their kitchen. The host doesn't live in the same place so it is like a hotel. REally warm friendly hosts. The breakfast is yummy. The location is amazing! Will visit again!
Excellent location directly opposite the ferry terminal. Friendly staff were helpful. The rooms were a good size and the breakfast was good. We didn't eat there in the evening. There is a co-op store 5mins walk from the hotel and it takes 20mins to walk into the town center. There is ample free parking at the hotel.
Loved the view of the water from our room. Loved that we had a hidden opening to a second small room behind the bookcase. Loved the breakfast. Located a short walk from Commercial Street and the Harbor of Lerwick and as we were fortunate to have good weather (except for wind), enjoyed the walk.
The hotel proprietors were wonderful people, they made us feel welcome and were very accommodating. We would go back there again and were actually sorry we didn't stay there longer. The food was great as well as the hospitality. It was a wonderful experience!
The location for Lerwick is brilliant. The bus stop just outside of the hotel (we got the bus south to Sumburgh Lighthouse). Easy walk to Tesco's if needed, and the port not too far.
Breakfast was delicious, good atmosphere and didn't feel rushed.
The apartment was warm, clean and well equipped. It was also pretty central in Lerwick so we walked to most places we wanted to go to. There was supplies left in the kitchen which was nice too. We would rent again if available.
Location was excellent, plenty of free parking spaces. Very good hotel for the rate charged. Right on the Highstreet. Will definitely be booking again, when the call arises.
Great location just off the high street in Lerwick. The guys running the GH were so friendly, helpful and accommodating it was a pleasure to stay there.
