Hereweka Retreat is a creative project bringing together a lifetime’s commitment to organic gardening and sustainable living. We thoroughly enjoyed building the Retreat and get real pleasure hosting guests from all over the world. We especially enjoy opening up our garden and grounds for visitors to enjoy. Here is a small exert about our lives written by Nathalie Brown in a magazine, The NZ House and Garden. Anna, a psychotherapist in Dunedin, and Peter, a GP in Portobello, bought 4.5ha of clay ridges and gullies on the peninsula in 1982 and have since transformed the property into a botanical wonderland. With time, dedication and expertise, anything is possible, it seems, when developing a garden. Gardening brought the couple together as University of Otago students in 1974, and they have been gardening together ever since. Their three sons were given tree names – Rowan, Linden and Jarrah – and, though daughter Rebecca missed out on a botanical tag, she named her first child Lily. Family is central to Anna and Peters lives. Their children and Grandchildren live close by and enjoy many family gatherings together.
