We had the most exceptional experience at Shiga No Yu - their staff was incredibly accommodating despite our poor Japanese and they provided a clean onsen, warm and cosy accommodation and most importantly the most amazing meals for breakfast and dinner every day! If you are looking for a traditional experience right outside a chairlift, this is the place to be!

breakfast is not the top but good enough. Buffet in winter season is practical can cater skiing guests fast so it doesn't bother me. Everything else are perfect especially the staff are just so kind, helpful, and able to help. The location is perfect. For more insight to others, driving there is super convenient. Parking lot is good enough, location is easy to access comparing to living more upper mountain. Can ski in and out for sure, backside of hotel can directly jump into a hidden slope to 西館山 (don't worry it's green line level), and can get back hotel by 蓮池 side. i.e. Even if the day is super heavily snowing that you cannot drive, you are still able to ski. Onsen in the hotel is good too. good temperature.

Amazing property with even more amazing staff. We stayed for two night during our honeymoon and couldn’t be happier with the experience. It was an authentic yet luxurious Ryokan. Our room was beautifully decorated, spotless and it even had its own onsen. The food was exceptional and the staff was very well trained and extremely friendly. Highly recommended this hotel and would love to go back on day.

Jigokudani Monkey Park

Animal enthusiasts can’t miss this park. Set in a valley, it’s home to a group of beautiful snow monkeys. On the way in, you’ll pass a few as they sit in the trees - and once you get to the hot springs, you’ll see why Jigokudani’s so popular with visitors and locals. Here, red-faced monkeys bathe in the warm water, Zen expressions across their faces.

If you are going during winter months:

If you are going during winter months: 1. get crampons - can be rented; saw plenty of people falling or slipping due to ice buildup 2. either go early (if you are driving) to secure parking slot closest to the entrance gate - the temporary parking (is a good 30-40 mins of extra walking) 3. or you book a taxi - they are allowed to drive all the way to the entrance of the walkway steps (this will save you time and energy) 4. go early or later to avoid crowds - there will naturally be a buildup of a queue along the stairs as people are waiting in turn to pay for the park entrance fee

It was OK - depends on how much experience you have with wild life in other parts of the world. The walk is about 40 minutes each way. The monkeys completely ignore the gawping humans, which is great. Unique experience but getting there and back using public transport was challenging

Charming little hotel with really friendly and helpful staff. Onsen in the basement was not crowded and really helped after a long trip. Hotel staff gave us a lift to Jigokudani Monkey Park for free!

The staff were wonderful. They took the time to make sure we had everything we needed, plus more. The location was perfect, central to all the private onsens and close to Jigokudani Monkey Park. The breakfast and dinner were amazing, highlighted by their care in sharing Japanese cuisine. Comfortable and clean. Highly recommended.

Very cool traditional tatami room with a great view. Onsen facilities were very nice and always accessible. Staff were very helpful, offering complimentary bus rides to the local Jigokudani Monkey Park, as well as to the train station on the day of our departure.

Early July, we were the only travellers so we had the onsen to ourselves. There was male, female and private onsen available. There was excellent service, and they welcomed our young toddlers. We got driven to the Jigokudani Monkey Park and picked up by Yumoto-san. Yumoto-san and his wife also helped style our family in yukata for photos.

We specifically choose this hotel to visit the Jigokudani Monkey Park. For this visit, it was the ideal location! Right in front of the hotel was a bus stop that went to the park. The hotel itself doesn't offer breakfast, but they work together with a hotel nearby for a traditional Japanese breakfast which was a really nice experience for a good price! You also had the possibility to reserve a private indoor onsen, which was a fun experience. They also provided yukata's that you could wear in the room and when going to the onsen.
