Angkor Wat

This epic temple is so revered in Cambodia it appears on the country’s flag. Built during the 12th-century heyday of the Khmer Empire, it was first dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu before becoming a Buddhist temple. In terms of size and complexity, you can’t help but be bowled over by its barrage of giant moats, steep walls and lofty beehive-like towers.

It's incredible - everything you read about is true.

It's incredible - everything you read about is true. This is a vast site and part of a vast complex of temples all from the same era. You need to arrange a trip/tour to see this properly and get from one site to another. For us the best way was through our excellent hotel in Seam Reap (Rithy Rin Angkor Hotel) who booked a guide/tuk-tuk driver for us at a fraction the price of the tour companies. Be prepared for a lot of walking over fairly rough ground- have proper shoes, very high temperatures and aggressive sales tactics from the locals.

Wonderful site.

Wonderful site. The biggest and best preserved relic of that era hundreds of years ago. Most of the time one can escape the crowds and have some moments of peace, especially away from the center of the site.

This is an amazing place that should be visited several times. The government managed tourist pass can cover three days which provides access to the temple area of Seim Reap. I recommend a first visit with a government registered guide. Then return on later days to wander and really immerse yourself in the history. Make sure your camera is ready to take a lot of photos because you will find yourself snapping shots very quickly and often.

Choose a sun rise tour.

Choose a sun rise tour. I would recommend to get a 3 day pass. Day one go for a short circuit sun rise tour. Day 2 go for a long circuit guided tour. On the day 3, rent a bike and explore the place yourselves.

The property is very well located and within easy walking distance of all restaurants and attractions. The rooms were very clean, the beds really comfortable and the whole place very calm and peaceful. The food in the restaurant is excellent and very good value for money. All the staff are lovely and happy and always willing to help. We booked our driver for Angkor Wat through the hotel which was easy and competitively priced and the driver was lovey and knowledgeable. Also the laundry service is excellent.

Really lovely place and welcomed us with drinks! quick and easy check in process with friendly staff. We were also able to book transport to see angkor wat and other temples for an all day price, and we negotiated on a good price. Rooms were spacious with comfortable bed and good bathroom. The rooms use a manual key so just remember to lock the door when you go to bed and when you go out. They also offer massages in the hotel. Location was good, near the food market!

The rooms were clean, good sized. The afternoon snacks were an added attraction. The location was very good, you can walk to the national museum, covered market, etc. It was unfortunate that we just stayed for 1 night as our incoming flight got cancelled. We took the sunrise trip for the Angkor Wat, so missed the breakfast. Overall, the hotel is highly recommendable.

I had an absolutely fantastic stay at The Elephant. The staff was so so lovely and helpful, the rooms were incredibly comfortable and the pool was perfect after a hot day of exploring the many temples of Angkor Wat. I particularly enjoyed afternoon tea everyday! The best hotel is stayed in, in Cambodia!

Do take a guided tour of the temples but not with Siem Reap Shuttle Tours - such an amazing place to visit with so much to learn and discover...shame we had the tour guide from "I don't like you because you won't buy the expensive lunch on offer" so he from then on hardly spoke to us! Incredibly rude and spoilt what should have been one of our best explorations. Out of eight people on the tour we were the only two to stick it out till the end as we only had the one day to see as much as we could...we then had to watch many programmes on Angkor Wat to find out what we had just seen! A big shame.
