Compared to other Cambodia cities the prices are doubled on everything from a bottle of water up. People are not as friendly and more apt to provide poor service. Watch the change you are given is correct. Your best bet are the street vendors for being honest. Very touristy in a negative way (bars). Fine for a stop over with a day or two of sights but not really a place to stay long.
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum was a must visit. We learned a lot. Also, went to the Killing Fields (which was a about 25 minutes away from the Museum. Took a tuk tuk to get there.) Since we did the Museum we did not need to go to the Killing Fields. Royal Palace Phnom Penh was good to see. The Silver Pagoda is known for its silver tile floor. The silver floor is highly overrated. It is made up of tarnished silver tiles - not pretty to look at. Took a half day boat trip to the Silk Island. Enjoyed the outing. Small old boat. Fruit and drink. Not a diverse scenery but still enjoyed the boat ride. The process of of silkworms
For first time visitors of Phnom Penh, especially if you are arriving from Europe or North America, you'll need a few days just to get over jet-lag, then a couple of days at most for "sightseeing." The main things are the National Palace, the National Museum, S-21 Torture Center and the Killing Fields. All this can be done in one long day if necessary. This is not to say there's nothing else, but these are the main things. If you are new to Asia, then there might be a lot of "new and exotic" things to see. But if this isn't your first rodeo, then going to yet another "Asian food market" or "Central market" is the same thing you would see anywhere else in Asia. And there are two types of weather in Cambodia: brutally hot (100˚F/34˚C) brutally humid and not-rainy, and brutally hot (100˚F/34˚C) brutally humid and rainy. The latter part of the year is going to be a lot less "fun" than the former. Phnom Penh is a dirty, dusty, noisy town, looking like most any other SE Asian town, so choose your season and length of time carefully. Most people make Siem Reap/Angkor Wat a short side trip from Phnom Penh. When the big new international Chinese built and owned Siem Reap airport opens, I suggest making Phnom Penh a short side trip from Siem Reap/Angkor Wat. There are hundreds of temples to see in Siem Reap, and as a town, Siem Reap is more compact, cleaner, cooler and has a pretty happening downtown scene that is very accessible. And it's a bit cooler (both in hipness and temperature.) If we went back to Cambodia again, we'd just make a beeline for Siem Reap. Sorry Phnom Penh, just telling it like I see it.
Phnom Penh striked me as a crowded place, not really adjusted for pedestrians. It has it's handful of sights and historical places, but I think two days is enough to see them all. I would recommend Wat Phnom and Royal Palace. National Museum is also good, but it's pretty small, especially when you already visited Angkor National Museum in Siem Reap. Everything else is skippable I would say. Also it's hard to find a good grociery store there.
Phnom Penh is such a great city. Compared to other capitals in SE Asia we have travelled to, this one is clean and charming. You can cross the road as a pedestrian without taking your life in your hands which surely must be a bonus!
Phnom Penh and Cambodia is a beautiful place in general. Phnom Penh main attractions tend to be those associated with the Khmer Rouge regime which can be hard, but they are vital for history. The roads are busy so be careful but it means it's easy to pick up a tuktuk and get around. Plenty of Western bars, restaurants and cafes if that's your thing. Also plenty of Khmer restaurants if you want to try the local dishes. Overall, I probably prefer Siem Reap as the roads are a little quieter but I will definitely still be back in Phnom Penh someday too as the both seem to come hand-in-hand.
Very nice hotel with large and comfortable bedrooms, exceptionally clean. The pool is great and the cocktails are too! Food and breakfast was all fresh and good quality. Very attentive staff, they forwarded my tablet that I'd left in the safe to another hotel in Siem Reap for me and kept me updated via WhatsApp. I travelled for 3 weeks in Vietnam and Cambodia and while the other hotels were all nice, this was the best one of the whole trip in terms of facilities. I would definitely return!
I liked everything about this hotel. The service was courteous, attentive, and professional. The room is worthy of its 5 star status with all the amenities. The grounds are lovely with lots of foliage and historical decor. The pool setting is fabulous. I didn’t try the restaurant except for the breakfast which was good (not great). Loved the gym. Location is perfect for a tourist, right next to the Royal Palace and the Mekong riverside. Excellent value. Highly recommend.
I was very impressed with personalize check in. Speedy check in with the host greeted us personally at the entrance of the building unlike transitional old hotel check in. The unit is very brand new, fully furnished and warming design. However, it is facing to River Superb view I’ve ever seen! Definitely my best experience, and will be back to stay again. Highly recommended.
Chamkar Mon, Phnom Penh
It was our second stay in Phnom Penh, the apartament is conveniently located in the city centre, close to the war museum and many cafeterias and restaurants. When you type the name of hotel on the map it is easy to find. The room was big and clean with comfortable bed. We could make a laundry BUT you have to have your own detergent. There is also a modestly equiped kitchen.
This has been the best hotel I stayed at during my 2 weeks visit to Cambodia. The staff was extremely helpfull, the room is very cousy with all the facilities you need, the room was extremly clean and fresh with nice view to the local neighbourhood. . As the windows didnt face the street it was very quite as well. There are plenty of good restaurants and bars around.
I do like this hotel very much so that I always recommend to my friends to come and stay. they are all enjoyed their stay. Staff are very friendly, helpful and kindly. location is best, it is at the capital of the city. i would recommend this hotel to stay.
It’s such a best stay in a hotel located in Phnom Penh city center, close to everything. The hotel offer a best price with comfortable stay. Nice room and clean, I recommended.
The pool and hotel vibe. It was a tropical getaway in the middle of the city. Very beautiful and peaceful place to stay and enjoy the day.
We were supposed to stay at the Okay Palace but they put us up at the Boutique Hotel instead.
Good hotel in city centre
