Hotel Fronfeste takes the prison theme to the extreme, in the best possible way. They even have a "prison escape" adventure that other guests participated (we did not), in which they wore striped uniforms, that made the whole experience feel more lighthearted and fun. On a more serious side, I work in corrections in the US, and it was interesting to me to see the structure and construction of this authentic medieval prison. The staff was very, very friendly and super helpful and nice. (If you are the type who would not like to have casual, personal conversation with the staff, this may not be the place for you.)

Featuring a terrace, restaurant, bar and free WiFi, Bootshaus Amberg is located in Amberg, a 4-minute walk from Stadttheater Amberg and 200 yards from Stadtmuseum Amberg.

This is a beautiful property located in a peaceful, secluded area. We were truly able to unwind and unplug from the world and just enjoy one another’s company in their immaculate spa. The facilities were SUPER clean. We booked the half board and thoroughly enjoyed our 5-course dinner. The bar area was a nice place to relax and enjoy a drink after dinner. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.

Gasthof Schiessl is an institution that has been around for generations and knows the drill. The room was spacious, immaculately clean and comfortable. Breakfast was plentiful, varied and nicely presented. Dinner options were limited, but there was something to suit everyone: fish, meat, and even a salad. Portions are huge. Prices for food and drinks are comparable to those in Belgium. A bonus for bikers: the Bavarian-Bohemian Friendship Trail runs through the area, a long-distance cycling route connecting Altendorf with Schönsee. We cycled from Altendorf to Schönsee. You can also stop and turn back at Oberviechtach, or cycle a few more kilometres beyond Oberviechtach, where the route winds through beautiful landscapes. Further on, the route becomes quite challenging, with some steep climbs.
