We absolutely love the atmosphere of this place. The old wood panel walls and the giant logs that make up the frame in the lobby, have a rustic charm that leaves us relaxed and feeling like we’re somewhere overseas. I’m not a huge fan of jazz, but I love the sound of it in the lobby coming through through the old warm speakers near the fireplace. The food is another plus about this place. I’m not a huge fan of super fancy and pretentious food. What they serve here is good and substantial so you’re not left craving something else in 20 minutes. for dinner we actually got lunch items. We probably could have gotten away with ordering two lunch entrées for the three of us because they’re that filling. The buffet breakfast was fantastic. Unlike the buffet at a business hotel where you’re looking for something that’s the least unappealing to eat, for this buffet there were so many things that looked so good that it was a challenge not to overheat actually we skip lunch this afternoon because we ate so much at breakfast today.

The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.

The meals were home-cooked, and quite delightful. The owner helped us facilitate a side trip in the area, very kindly. It's a remote rural location, which has its own beauty.

TUNAGU Base is set in Tsuruoka. The air-conditioned accommodation is 12 km from Kamo Aquarium, and guests can benefit from on-site private parking and complimentary WiFi.

The breakfast was a delicious traditional Japanese style meal. The portions provided were very filling! The room was beautiful and more spacious than expected. We had an amazing view. The location is perfect right in town and near onsens. Staff were all absolutely amazing!

Featuring garden views, TSURUOKA GINZA 朙 sukima provides accommodation with a garden and a balcony, around 12 km from Kamo Aquarium. Very convenient house, large with a lot of facilities and private parking. Sota-san is a great host. The location is perfect, close to the main spots and excellent restaurants and coffee places. There is also a great museum run by Sato-san with Lots of good memories about the 80’ties and 90’ties!
