Hotel in Xiahe
Centrally located in Xiahe Town, Overseas Tibetan Hotel is a 5-minute walk from Labrang Monastery and steps from Xiahe Bus Terminal. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant. Ideal way to get to experience Tibet in less than a day's travel from Beijing! The hotel is really just in front of the big Labrang monastery, which can easily compete with the big temples in Lhasa. However, one does not need any special permits for Labrang/Xiahe, which is much easier to get to using the high speed train from Beijing to Lanzhou, followed by a 3.5 hours car ride organized by Losang, the owner of the Overseas Tibetan Hotel. While most of the travelers in 2023 were obviously Chinese tourists, this is one of the places that will also appeal to Westerners as the owner and several of the staff speak very good English. Losang has been a travel agent for many years and can provide excellent recommendations for excursions around Xiahe and travel to other regions. The hotel has spacious rooms with private bathrooms, all with reliable services. The staff is really making an effort to accommodate any requests from their guests to allow to maximally enjoy your stay in Labrang. I would recommend to stay at least 3 nights, but one can easily stay a week. It's a pity that Western tourists have not yet found the way back to China and Tibet, traveling around individually is not a problem. A few tips for foreign travelers to China: - Make sure you book your hotels before applying for your Chinese Visa. Bring printouts to the visa application centre. - Install both WeChat and Alipay on your smartphone, and do the validation of your ID before departure. You can then link your credit card upon arrival in China and pay for virtually everything with either App. Cash is barely used anymore in China. - Make sure to book a SIM/eSIM card with unlimited mobile data, you will need internet connection everywhere in China to pay. Labrang also has perfect coverage, only in the surrounding grasslands can one loose connection at some locations. - Use trip.com for train bookings, other apps ask for a Chinese phone number.

Lanzhou itself is really nothing to write home about. There are a few things to see (the provincial museum, South Mountain, the Sun Yat-sen Bridge and Waterwheel Park on the Yellow River). Also hand-pulled noodle soup. But it's gray and dirty and has awful traffic and ugly architecture. Lanzhou is really only worth going to as a jumping-off point for the rest of the AWESOME sites in Gansu Province: southern Gansu and the Labrang Monastery and ethnically Tibetan grassland areas, the Danxia and Yadan geological parks, Bingling Temple and Maijishan Mountain, of course the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang -- basically lots of arid, sheep-filled Silk Road awesomness.
Best trip in my life! Gansu is an incredibly rich cultural region, the oases, the Mogao grottos with the most amazing 360 degree cinema screen I've ever seen. We'll definitely be back for more, especially to see the south region.
Transportation in Lanzhou as well as the traffic is horrible - but there are some sights to be wirth visiting (Gansu Museum, Zhongshan Bridge, Baitashan Pak)
Zhangye is a pure jewel of Gansu standing in the middle of that slender and totally underestimated province. Apart of magnificent Danxia Geo Park where Mother Nature partied hardest ever, there is also Dafo Temple in the middle of the city and Mati Temple and caves out of Zhangye. City is small and barely few pople are speaking good English but its very beautiful and there are many things to see and hike to magnificent Qilian Shan range. Only if you are pro of course. Since i am not meat lover Gansu definitely its not my cup of tea since they have a lot of meet, especially lamb. But This part is famous for the potato farming and they have darn good mashed potatoes everywhere! Loved it! Also a lot of corn. The most convenient way to go around is to rent a driver cause Danxia and Mati are on the opposite sides and quite far from the city center. Start the day early and finish late. Weather is great most of the time. Hope to head back there next year too. Also - avoid during national chinese holidays. Try to go during the week, not weekends, especially to Danxia. And try to spend there at least couple of hours. It worth it!!!!!
Gansu Historical Museum is superb, and hike up to White Pagoda very lovely . You can ride on 'bladder rafts' on the Yellow River at the water wheel park.
Lanzhou was fine for a day or two go stop on the way to Xining and the rest of Gansu. Great food, and a couple of sites to see. Baitashan was a nice afternoon trip and can be a nice, peaceful place to get away from the busy city streets. Pretty easy to get around, buses come in 2s, air conditioned and not. Air conditioned bus gets so full that it doesn't really feel much different than the non-air conditioned bus, so no need to wait. Definitely get some Lanzhou Lamian! (Noodles)
The people were very friendly and polite. My favorite time was visiting the Gansu museum. I especially enjoyed the Silk Road exhibit. We also really enjoyed the local food. Just look for a busy noodle shop and point at some noodles. They are delicious.
