Great hostel for a night stay in Alajuela, close to the airport and to the bus terminal. Friendly staff, free coffee in the morning even if breakfast isn't included. Hot water available, clean rooms, great bar/restaurant with a view on the 4th floor. Would definitely recommend!
Landing at the airport at night, we stayed in this city until morning because it is close. San jose is much further away. We only used this town so we would not be travelling around costa rica at night. Night life in alajuela was a little scary, but during the day it was much mre comfortable. Public bus in alajuela took us straight to la fortuna the next morning. It is smarter to stay in alajuela verse san jose if you need short accomodations for travel to and from airport.
Alajuela is the best place to stay when arriving or leaving San Jose. Getting to the town center is a little difficult, just because of traffic. However, the taxi drivers are helpful and fair. It can be challenging finding a place to eat in the evening, but we found some good food in a coffee shop about 2 blocks off the center. The plaza was lively with families and a marimba band.
We spent 3 nights at a comfortable hotel relaxing after 6 weeks travelling around Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Alajuela is not a tourist town but it does have an international airport.
Alajuela has nothing to offer for tourist, even the exhibition at the only museum was closed. It is very convenient to and fro to the airport and maybe a day to visit the poas vulcano and the chocolate or coffee tour
Alajuela is a nicer city than San Jose. People feel safe to walk the streets there even at night. It is only a $6 taxi ride to or from the airport and buses are even less costly. We didn't do much there except to rest, eat dinner that night and breakfast the next morning and prepare to fly back to the states the next day. There are several parks around the city that help to break up the side by side buildings, noise and heavy traffic with green and tranquility.
We based our first and last nights here as it is close to the airport and Volcan Poas. I have visited Costa Rica before and last time I went to San Jose from the airport - this time was a much better plan! Alajuela is much more of a local town and a lot less hectic than SJO, no need to go that extra distance to the capital when you can get everywhere from here, and taxi transfers can pick you up at Dennys near the airport to go off to other places in Costa Rica, so no need to even go to the big city at all if you want a totally city-free holiday. We didnt have time to look around the town itself, but we did stay in a brilliant little budget hotel on the way to Poas.
If you have a late afternoon or evening arrival flight, or an early departure flight, Alajuela is the perfect location to stay for starting or ending your Costa Rican travels. It's only a few minute cab or shuttle ride from SJO. Getting to or from central San Jose can take an hour or more. I highly recommend Resturante Monteleone - down the street from Hotel Cortez Azul. It offered the best meal of our 2 week trip and Deb and I didn't mind spending $70.00 US (included tip) on meals, drinks (4), desert & coffee as we practiced our Spanish with Ronald, our delightful waiter.
I like the free airport shuttle and the hot showers. I didn't like the general vibe of the hostel. There were no comfortable common spaces and no kitchen. Alajuela, in my opinion, isn't a place I'd visit unless I have a very late arriving flight or early morning departing flight.
Visited Alajuela for an afternoon before flying home. Wouldn't go specially but it's very close to airport and much closer and cheaper to get to than San Jose

We spent three different nights here during our trip to Costa Rica. Very nice and clean rooms, very hospitable owner (she even drove us, against a small fee, to a meeting point in Alajuela where we had to be very early in the morning), good breakfast. Recommended (for us it was also conveniently close to the car rental company we used). I particularly appreciated the corner where guests could make themselves tea or coffee (I am a tea drinker and I really missed having a water boiler while in Costa Rica).

Staff was great; friendly, helpful and flexible. We were able to book at the last minute, arrive late and still got an excellent reception! Furthermore, the basic facilities are created in an original and creative way, which provides a nice and cosy atmosphere. Everything is clean, which we Dutch appreciate much. In addition, the hotel has a guarded parking within 100 meter/yards (nice if you have a rental car); drop off luggage, park you car/motorbike safely and enjoy the old center Alajuela.

Randy the host is a very relaxed, friendly and helpful person. He emailed me useful information before I even arrived in Costa Rica. The Vida Tropical is a nice quiet place with a relaxed vibe, about 5 -7 minutes walk from the centre of this ordinary but friendly town of Alajuela. The beds were comfortable, the breakfast nice and the amount of information offered was excellent. The showers were hot (unusual in CR and definitely appreciated!) Good wifi too. I would definitely stay here again.

Great stay, well more like a Homestay. The hosts are friendly and the property has a terrace at the back where you can watch the local wildlife. 2 km from the Airport and a similar distance to Alajuela. San Jose center is about 15 minutes by bus. Great place to stay if you want to experience Costa Rican family life. Breakfast is great too and included in the price. If you're going to the airport I recommend staying here for that something different :-)

I have stayed in the Cala Inn for one day after travelling by plane to Costa Rica and thus is a great place to get back on track with sleep! The people who work there are really nice and can give you lots of tips on what to do on your fist day! Alajuela in itself is not really a place where you wanna stay for more than one night but the hostel is directly in the center of Alajuela and you can easily reach supermarkets, shops and restaurants from there.

The woman (Doris) who runs this hotel is outstanding. She made our stay at rancha azul very memorable. We felt like we were a part of her family and were very well taken care of. The hotel lies a few kilometers outside of alajuela but dont let it put you off. Its quiet and peaceful with very nice views. The rooms are also nice with comfortable beds. I liked that we had 2 pillows per person.

Spacious room with very comfortable beds and fantastic views of San Jose and Alajuela. Amazing grounds with hiking trails and waterfalls and 3 pools [one with a Jacuzzi and spectacular vistas for sunsets. The staff was warm and friendly and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. Only 20 minutes from the airport so it makes great first or last nights stay in San Jose.

After 5 season in Costa Rica, spending always 1/2 nights in Alajuela when i arrive and same when i leave, i've finally found a great hotel where to stay!! I've tried probably almost 10 different places and Pacande is the best i would recomend, right in the center but not noisy, very kind owners, perfectly clean room and good breakfast! I'll come back for sure

Very good location, we arrived after midnight and it took us less than 15 minutes (10$) with red taxi to get to the apartments. Maria is super friendly and helpful host, she gave us plenty of good recommendations. Apartment was clean and well equipped. Alajuela is very nice small town, with nice restaurants and central americanbiggest shopping mall.

Simple accomodation with charme and great care of the staff. Very good location for those who just need overnigt before or after flight near San Jose Alajuela airport. Nice garden with small swimming pool, hammock and place to relax in shade. Very, very good breakfast with personal attitude of Johny and his family.

Great host, clean, comfortable rooms, good location, good price, y gallo pinto muy delicioso por desayuno. Host also allowed us to stash bags after checkout. Plenty of local bars & restaurants a short walk away as well as markets and plazas. Perfect stay, would definitely revisit for my next trip to Alajuela.

This is a newly remodeled apartment, one of 3 in what was a large house. The neighborhood is a small farm that has been divided among family members who all have modern homes. Completely secure and away from the din of Alajuela. The room was much more modern and larger than we expected.

Small hotel nicely located not very far from the airport. The shuttle service was good. The neighborhood was fine in the daytime although I would note that the car rental company I used told me I should park off-street at night in Alajuela. The hotel does have off-street parking.

The king size bed. The owners (or their niece) were very nice. Restaurants nearby. They provided a lot of information about what to do in Costa Rica, where to eat in Alajuela, what to see, etc. 10 minutes ride to the airport.

Very friendly staff who helped us sort various bits of travel, very convenient location for Alajuela and airport. Nice patio with comfy seating, pool and lots of bird life; good coffee and breakfast in the morning.

The staff were extremely friendly. Lovely rooms, very comfortable beds. Nicely appointed above the town, so it is quiet and pleasant. You do need to catch a ride into town, though, if you want to explore Alajuela.

Wonderful location, comfortable beds, nice bathrooms and towels, incredibly friendly and helpful staff! A lovey place to stay while passing through Alajuela and only a $3-4 taxi ride to the airport!

The hotel is in the center of Alajuela, close to the airport. The hotel is also close (15min drive) to the aves-zoo, which is very beautiful. Nice ending of the trip.

Close to the airport, walking distance to anything in the city of Alajuela. English speaking helpful staff. An excellent option to staying in San Jose.

Located very close to the Alajuela town center. The hostel owner had a cute puppy.
