Wernigerode

One of 6,242 reviews:
"What a beautiful old town and a very handy base to explore the Harz area. A short walk to the Railway stations of both the Harz Railway where you can take a steam train to the Brocken summit - reputedly the home of witches, an the DB station where I would recommend a trip to nearby Goslar. There is one of those little tourist trains that can take you around the historic old streets in both towns. Wernigerode also holds outdoor music festivals in the Market Square in August."

"Goslar with its many streets of beautiful and characterful old buildings comes highly recommended. The Kaiserpfalz was worth a visit and helpfully had audioguides in English (not everywhere does). The Brauhaus in the main square was great especially if you like locally-brewed beer and typical German food."

"I loved this town! It hadn't shown up on many reviews of the area and not many of the Hanoverians I spoke to had heard of it, but I picked it because I wanted to walk the Heinrich Heine Weg. I was pleasantly surprised as it is so beautiful and had many other walks around the town. There is a small river flowing through it with a couple of lakes which all combined made the town feel very tranquil and relaxed. My other options were Goslar or Bad Hartzburg, but I am glad I stayed in a smaller town as it had a much more relaxing feel and didn't take that much longer to get to. There are plenty of really good walks and hikes nearby. If you are doing the Heinrich Heine Weg I would recommend following the 9E path. It was steeper going up, but much more beautiful and had more bush track. I came down the other path which for the most part is gravel road and goes through dead forest that used to be commercial forestry but is being allowed to return to nature."

Nice and quiet location, yet easy enough to get around. Spacious room and bathroom (stunning, in fact), delicious breakfast, coffee all day. Wellness area was a real treat (unfortunately the whirlpool wasn't working), but we used the Sauna and the rest area to our heart's content. Highly recommend it!

The staff were very helpful, we forgot to take our phone chargers, and the hotel staff were able to lend us one. The breakfast was great. The room was great, and even the restaurant food was great during dinner. All nice hiking places in Thale were just in a walking distance. There was a bunny rabbit giving out Easter chocolates during breakfast. Overall we all had a great time!! Thinking of going back already.

You are given a unit to yourself, which is basically a double story house. There is a TV and kitchen and 2 bathrooms. The shower and bathtub were both quite fancy with various settings and great water pressure. The windows all had the automatic outside blinds which assisted in keeping the room dark and at a good temperature. It was also close to city centre, which was great as we walked everywhere.

We enjoyed a short romantic break. The location was perfect for this purpose. The hotel is located in a beautiful area of the Harz, surrounded by a wonderful forest. However, it was easy to find the hotel and, as we were travelling by car, we were able to easily get around and visit Stolberg, the Rose Park in Sangerhausen and other interesting places. The hotel grounds are also incredibly beautiful. Although the lower park was closed due to the construction of the new swimming pool, our room nevertheless faced the front of the hotel grounds and we enjoyed the view undisturbed. The breakfast and dinner were super lovely with an excellent selection of food. Perhaps the restaurant should consider displaying the wine bottles when they only serve a glass of wine, instead of bringing a glass already filled with wine to the table from outside. The wellness area with swimming pool is excellent. I had a facial and a massage. And it lived up to the highest expectations. I would definitely do it again if I had a longer stay.

The hotel is in a good location beside the cable car station. The price I paid was incredible value for the quality of the facilities and food…the breakfast was one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve had. The four course dinner was very good quality although the portion size could perhaps have been a little larger after a day of hiking. Cake was also provided in the afternoon which unfortunately I missed out as I was out. I also appreciated the travel pass which saved me a lot of money for my bus journey home as well as a visit to nearby Goslar. I was also very impressed by the staff at mealtimes as well as the man at reception who was very welcoming.

Wernigerode is perhaps overlooked as a place to visit as Goslar is maybe got more focus but it is a beautiful town with much to see and do. If a castle visit is on the cards, bear in mind it is quite a walk up from the parking place so worth considering taking the bimmel train from the town centre. It costs 8 euro return for adults but worth the outlay. There is also a horse and carriage option around the town. We ate at the kartoffel haus and it was great but be aware it is closed between 2-5 pm

Very picturesque town and the locals were very friendly. Lots of excellent cafes. We liked Fairista which sells its own coffee roasts and homemade cakes. We loved the art shops too. There is a good one that sells woodcuts and linocuts. The centre has lots of interesting shops to buy antiques and souvenirs but it's hard to get some basics (eg toiletries) unless you go to the shops around Gernröder Weg. One tip: many of the smaller shops only accept cash!

Goslar is off the beaten path, so may involve extra train connections. It is a small town and the old town is very compact and walkable. Most of the buildings are very well maintained medieval renaissance. The town supported the nearby nearby copper silver mines. The buildings are covered and roofed with slate with distinctive patterns. If you have time, you can explore the Harz Mts and the mining museums. The very local beer is Gose from the Brauerei Goslar, cloudy wheat beer with some spice and a bit salty. Named after the river Gose

Braunlage has a lot to offer, nice walks, and we loved the monster roller activity on the mountain. Puppe's bar is a really nice place to drink. And you have a great choice of nice restaurants. Reservation is required, especially the best rated restaurants on trip advisor are usually completely occupied. You can do some nice shopping too. We visited Quedlinburg, Halberstadt, Goslar, bad Harzburg, Thale and Weringerode, all very beautiful cities/villages. The roads in between these cities are beautiful.

Schieke is a small and quiet touristic centre.

Schieke is a small and quiet touristic centre. There are few restaurants, general store and pharmacy there. We were here in mid July and there were few people there. There are many hiking trails around. We liked the trails to Brocken, Wurmberg and Schnarcherklippen. We visited historical towns Wernigerode, Quedlingburg and Goslar which were very nice. The Bodental canyon is worth for seeing, too. The forests in a large part of the national park have been attacked by bark beetles. There are basically no mature trees left. The views are sometimes bleak and there is no choice but to wait for the new forest to grow.

If you want nature for your holiday, then Ilsenburg is the right choice! Mountains, trees, fantastic view from top! For hiking it’s one of the best route! Unfortunately, there’s also part of nature that, most of the trees are affected by the fest or plague so you will see that a lot of trees are dying or dead and some mountain are bald! Anyhow, we did hiking down and up till Brocken! And up there , 1142 m high is breathtaking👍😊

A wonderful old village that has survived the test of time.

A wonderful old village that has survived the test of time. The old city centre is full of beautiful historic houses. Wonderful restaurants to be found in town. From here you can take the steam train into the Harz mountains or just drive/ride the great mountain roads.

Quedlingburg is a charming old town with hundreds of old timber-framed houses, many of which have been restored. There are many cafes on the market square, but it is worth venturing away from the centre towards the cathedral , where it can be less busy. A guided tour is worth it, as it draws your attention to things you might not otherwise see. A walk up to Münzenberg gives a great view of the surrounding countryside. A walk/hike up the Bodetal near Thale is well worth it. On a sunny day it quite shaded, so a pleasant walk.
