Sauerland highlights

Motorbiking through the "Land of 1000 Mountains

Explore the heavily forested valleys and hills of the Sauerland countryside, nicknamed the 'Land of 1000 Mountains'.

Winter sports at Winterberg's Skiliftkarussell

Skiing, snowboarding, bobsleigh - Winterberg has it all. Snow-machines and floodlights mean you can hit the slopes day and night.

Hiking up Kahler Asten Mountain

Sauerland offers over 30,000 km of hiking trails. Check out the views from Kahler Asten in the Rothaargebirge mountain range.

Ski-jumping and mountain-biking in Willingen

Every year Willingen hosts the Ski-Jumping World Cup, as well as a mountainbiking festival and biking competitions on Ettelsberg Mountain.

Thermal baths and saunas

The region is dotted with numerous spas, hot springs and outdoor pools. Try the ones at Olsberg and Lüdenscheid.

The Kunstpfad Cycling Route along the Ruhr

After incorporating art installations along the River Ruhr trail in 2010, this is probably the area's most vibrant cycle route.

Sauerland's Bison

Lucky visitors to Bad Berleburg may spot wisents (European bison) in their natural habitat. Europe’s largest land mammals are gentle giants and roam around close to the Rothaarsteig hiking trail.

FAQs about hotels in Sauerland

Something For All Outdoor Lovers

The peaceful and rural Sauerland lies across the south-east part of Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia and spreads on both sides of the region’s 2 major rivers: the Ruhr and Lenne. With over 30,000 km of marked hiking trails, and plenty of ski and water sports facilities, the Sauerland is a dreamland for the outdoor sports lover.

Not only does the region have an abundance of mountain biking routes, it also features the famous bobsleigh track in Winterberg and ski jump arena at Willingen. All that adds to Sauerland being the most popular tourist region in this part of Germany.

Though most of this region is sparsely inhabited, it still has some picturesque cities and villages to visit and in which to enjoy some local cuisine and beer. Germany’s largest privately owned brewery, Warsteiner, is located in one of them - Warstein. Other bigger cities include Iserlohn, Ludenscheid and Arnsberg.

This old industrial region is recently showing its new, more nature-friendly face. Due to its densely forested landscape, Sauerland has been chosen as the first place in this part of Europe to reintroduce the Wisent, also called the European bison.

Whether you’re looking for a hotel in Willingen or a guest house in Winterberg, Booking.com offers more than 400 properties for your perfect Sauerland holiday.

I booked late and arrived late after a 14km hike! The kitchen was already closed, but they still made me a light meal! Ibwas only there for one night, but everything looked so good and the people were very helpful! The breakfast was very good, but as i've been to many hotels, the breakfast was standard for that kind of pricerange, so that's still excelent but not different. It might be because i chose the stirred eggs and bacon with herbs mixed in(so not very local). The outside was very nice and clean! Eventough they(landscapers) were working outside my window i only noticed when i opened the windows. So even for a short stay this was worth the max amount of stars!

It is more touristic than I thought, a bit overcrowded for my taste. One reason to not take the cable car up the mountain. If you like crowds and lots of restaurants you're at the right place. We had a good meal in Willingen. We went to the hang bridge (Sky walk) nearby, we visited the Dimeltalsperre and we went shopping in Winterberg.

The Mother bikepark Winterberg is amazing, spent 4 whole days riding here, also the airbag Freestyle Area located opposite the bike park (only open weekend afternoons) is so friendly and super good value. Winterberg is an ideal base for a mountain bike stay as MTB Zone Willengen and Green Hill bike parks as within 30 min drive.

The room was very spacious. the staff very friendly and helpful. The food was good and plentiful and it is a buffet style and it is topped up quickly when anything runs low. there were 2 choices for payment of the buffet one includes just food and the next is food and all your wine and beer which is good value. There is also a swimming pool sauna and these were clean. We were a party of 16 and hired the bowling alley, it was 15 euros an hour so not much between us and it was great fun. The bus stop is at the bottom of the drive and the bus ride about 15 mins into Schmallenberg which has many shops, cafes and restaurants.

We have family that live here, so we have visited on numerous occasions. A very vibrant busy town, with plenty of shops and places to stop off to eat and drink. We ate at the Rhodos which is a greek restaurant and the food and service was excellent. The cafes and bars are very friendly. Our favourite bar is the Tivoli which is located by the river, overall a lovely place to spend a few days and watch the world go by.

Meschede is a lovely little town in the Sauerland - a great location to explore the beautiful surrounding areas. Great for hiking, cycling, swimming (there is the Hennesee in Meschede, and several other boating/swimming lakes within 30 minutes drive). Meschede has a few very nice restaurants for all budgets - Pizzaria Da Saracino is fantastic for pizza, Hitomi is great for Sushi and Asian cuisine, Hotel Von Korff is fabulous for a nice meal, Schroehjahrs is great for drinks.

Very picturesque town with some nice shops and bars and restaurants along the river. A beautiful church set in stunning grounds and walks along cobbled streets. Nestled on a lake that is a lot bigger than expected so a lake cruise could be had or boating and paddle boarding. A great swimming pool with tube rides for kids. Restaurants were buzzing along the shore line. Just don’t forget that Germany has no Sunday shopping.

Willingen is a nice village located in stunning nature.

Willingen is a nice village located in stunning nature. But it nevertheless became a hotspot for stag and hen parties and the likes. If you're looking for a calm and quiet place you need to come in Novembre or February. But if you - like we did - are keen to combine outdoor sports with a vibrant nightlife you've come to the right spot.
