"It's a perfect place to visit if you like history. I spent nearly a whole day up at the Wartburg castle, which was simple amazing. From learning about the art, music and literary history of the place, to the deeply important religious history (as a Lutheran, seeing the room where Martin Luther worked on his Bible translation was breathtaking), there's just so much in the one place. Tack on a trip to the Lutherhaus, and I was simply over the moon. I know there were more things I definitely wanted to do but didn't have time for, including a few museum options and the Bachhaus. It's a lovely city, very walkable and quaint, and the public transit, from what little I used, was very effective and clean. It does get very quiet in the evenings, so if you're looking for nightlife, this probably isn't the place, but since I like quieter nights, this was a perk for me! Also the natural landscape all around the city is gorgeous, with thick forests and sweeping mountains on all sides. Great for pictures (when it's not raining)!"

"If you love winter sports, in particular biathlon then Oberhof is the place for you. Also it's ideal for hiking and cycling especially along the Rennsteig. Ideally is best to have a car. The location of the Obere Schweizerhütte was right next to the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton runs. The cable car to the top was amazing and once at the top you're at the biathlon stadium. You xan also have a shooting experience."

This was a stay in a beautiful art deco style villa dated 1907. Once inside the boutique hotel, we entered a warm haven of a gold and brown coloured interior, and were heartily welcomed by the lady at the reception. She offered us a coffee, while she finished cleaning our room, as to allow us an early check-in. The hotel manager helped us with bringing up the luggage to our room. The room was spacious, tastefully decorated and with all comfort to feel “home away from home”. The breakfast was very good, with a wide range of homemade goodies. We will definitely be back! Thank you!

The location is very calm and the scenery magnificent. At our arrival, we received an upgrade for no extra cost. The hotel is brand new, as was the room. It was spacious, very modern, cosy and spotlessly clean, as the rest of the hotel. The personnel was very accommodating, friendly and polite, nothing was too much trouble. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food and service was just excellent. Breakfast next morning, served at the time of your choice and at your table, so no annoying buffet, frankly couldn't be topped. Value for money - top. I would not hesitate one second recommending this locations to anyone.

This is absolutely fabulous place, at the edge of beautiful lake, surrounded by nature. Spotless clean rooms, cozy, very well maintained. Fresh air, 100% silent nights and good quality beds leads to great sleep. Staff was very nice and helpfull. Easy going guy at the lobby bar and tasty food&beer makes your stay very comfy. 10 of 10 with no doubts !

The room was nice and all in all the atmosphere in the hotel was pleasant yet quirky. It had the feeling of staying at the Overlook Hotel from Stephen King's book The Shining. The staff was a bit overwhelmed by work and not necessarily up to their tasks and the hotel manager had to micromanage the tiniest things like fixing the Cappuccino machine. We only stayed a night so I can't comment much on the facilities. The breakfast was rather adequate and the staff members all were really nice.

I stayed in a single room as travelling alone. The room had a good view of the lake. The hotel was located in quiet area and access would have been simple except for some road works going on when I was there causing a detour through the houses. Dinners were set menu available around 18:30, which were tasty. Breakfast was rolls and condiments with tea or coffee.Other options were available. Very much a 'touring' hotel in German countryside.

The hotel has a "vintage look" so to speak, but it's nevertheless really nice. Located in a lovely village, the staff is friendly and the hotel offer lots to do. I booked a massage and also visited the cinema. The breakfast and dinner were absolutely delicious.

Great little town to stop over when travelling across Europe. The castle is beautiful. Loads of walking opportunities. Nature is close by. Lovely pub, lovely coffee place, great kebab :) All you want from a quick pit stop.

Oberhof is a lovely town in Thuringia, Germany, that caters...

Oberhof is a lovely town in Thuringia, Germany, that caters well to tourists of all ages, with plenty to do throughout the year. It is best known as a winter destination, but we visited in summer and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. For us, it was the perfect weekend recharge for two. We spent some time exploring the town and had an enjoyable lunch at Ánh Kim Asia Küche on our first day. Afterwards, we made the most of the facilities at the Schlossberghotel Oberhof, relaxing in the pool and sauna, having a drink at the bar, and enjoying a very nice dinner in the hotel restaurant, followed by breakfast the next morning. We then went for a hike around the Ohratalsperre, parking at and starting and finishing our walk from Gasthaus Zur Wegscheide. You can also enjoy a good traditional Landgasthof meal there after your hike. The Thuringian forests are beautiful, and Oberhof is a wonderful place for a relaxing and active weekend away.

Ilmenau is ideally located for hiking in the Thuringia forest. I stayed for 11 days, but would have liked to stay twice as long and still wouldn't have done all the hikes I'd earmarked. Do note that some trails can be quite steep.

Located in a valley, the city offers beautiful views to the surrounding mountains and is a good starting point to explore them. It is worth it to climb the Domberg, which overshadows the city until the Ottilienchapel, which offers a nice view over the city or even to the top that has a tower with a panoramic view of South Thuringia. The city itself is rather quiet and mostly elder people are to see. The downtown has some decent restaurant options, like the Greek restaurant Delphi or the fish restaurant "Gastmahl des Meeres". Via the nearby highway it is easy to explore nearby attractions.

Rudolstadt is a great little town with a lot for the tourist seeking history, porcelain, the life of Schiller, Goethe, and the origins of Kindergarten. Not your famous tourist destination, but well worth a few days exploring.

If you love winter sports, in particular biathlon then...

If you love winter sports, in particular biathlon then Oberhof is the place for you. Also it's ideal for hiking and cycling especially along the Rennsteig. Ideally is best to have a car. The location of the Obere Schweizerhütte was right next to the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton runs. The cable car to the top was amazing and once at the top you're at the biathlon stadium. You xan also have a shooting experience.

Beautiful city to visit if you enjoy long walks in nature (just be prepared for the wind 😁). With breathtaking landscapes and a beautiful city center, it is also extremely easy to travel to nearby cities and enjoy the wonders that the Thuringia region has to offer.

Suhl was the biggest weapon builders area in Germany before...

Suhl was the biggest weapon builders area in Germany before WW2. After the war all the machinery was taken to Russia. Prepare yourself by reading a bit about its history. Besides this it offers very nice surroundings.

Wartburg Castle is a gem definitely worth a stop for the...

Wartburg Castle is a gem definitely worth a stop for the history and beauty represented there. The steep hike up to the top is through pretty woods with lovely views, and the cafe at the top has a good selection of food, beers and coffee! We took the guided tour which I would recommend.
