Small Region With a Big Soul
Known as the birthplace of Joan of Arc, the Vosges region is situated in the east of France and named after the Vosges mountain range. It’s one of the original departments created during the French Revolution.
Its capital, Epinal, is located on the Moselle River and features plenty of parks, public gardens and a popular arboretum. Its charming old town holds ruins of a medieval castle and the Gothic Saint-Maurice’s Basilica.
South-east from Epinal, there is the town of Gérardmer, spreading along the shores of a lake with which it shares the name. It hosts the annual Fantastic Film Festival featurings horror films, which draws tourists and film buffs from all over Europe.
For a breath of history, stop by Domrémy-la-Pucelle, a small village where Joan of Arc’s path to greatness started and then move to Grand, known for the well-preserved Roman ruins: amphitheatre, aqueduct and mosaics.
