The room was lovely and warm and had everything we needed. We just stayed one night on our way to Orkney and it was good to be able to have dinner downstairs as it was quite cold and we really appreciated our hot breakfast before our ferry ride to Orkney the next morning. We would stay here again.

The museum and its cafe were excellent.

The museum and its cafe were excellent. The staff were knowledgeable and very keen to assist in any way. The coastline is beautiful with views across the Pentland Firth to Orkney. The bus and train services are good. The buses to John o’Groats provide easy and cheap access. Take your walking boots and hike to view the Duncansby Head lighthouse and the Stacks. Restaurants are few and far between and hotels are in demand so don’t be surprised by the pricing. Choose with care. A town trying hard to keep its head above water after the closure of the Dounrey nuclear power station.

The proprietors Euan & Emma were excellent company and very attentive to guests' needs. The hotel had an excellent menu with accompanying wines, beers, spirits, if required. The hotel also had an extensive range of locally-produced spirits. The accommodation was excellent and well-equipped. The only down-side was the lack of TV reception - although being without TV was somewhat of a blessing!

Castletown is a small village within easy reach of Thurso and John O'Groats, making it handy for onward travel to Orkney by both ferry routes from Scrabster and Gills Bay. Wick is also only approximately 14 miles away. The harbour is within walking distance from the main street and other pleasant walks nearby. Castletown Hotel offers evening meals and weekend lunches. A local shop has long opening hours which sells a variety of goods, handy if you've forgotten to pack for example, toiletries.

Lybster is a small, cozy town on the coast.

Lybster is a small, cozy town on the coast. We had an over the night stay, had dinner in the hotel and enjoyed a shot of whiskey in the hotel pub after an evening walk along its street. To some extend the town looked uninhabited, likely because it was a working day, we encountered less than 5 people. Only a few visitors in the camping spots along the ridge. We parked easily in front of the hotel building.
